I have a 240 sundeck with 5.0 / bravo 3. I boat in salt water but by the time I get home I am in light brackish canal water. Can I get away with a fresh water flush kit that will flush engine / exhaust ? Do I have to run the engine during to keep the thermostat open ? The boat is kept on a lift.

Merry Christmas. I'll chime in with my opinion. I boat in brackish water fairly often and store my boat on the trailer. I flush if I won't be running the boat again for a week or more. The fact you have it on a lift removes much of the corrosion concern. Another option to flushing is a salt neutralizer such as salt away.

My friend has a Volvo I/O which has a flush point on the engine where he blocks up a garden hose. He also has a lift and boats on the middle lower bay. He flushes if he knows he won't use the boat the next day.

I am unaware of that type of system for mercruiser but I'm sure its been done. My concern would be overpressure of the gaskets and seals, or forcing water into the engine. My concerns may be unwarranted because I am no expert.

If the engine is hot when you flush the t stat should be open. I wouldn't over think it too much. There are some who boat in ocean water and never flush.

Maybe now that there's a reply someone who really has experience with installing a flush kit will chime in.

Unfortunately, my boat came as raw water cooled. As it was cost prohibitive to convert it to fresh water cooled after the fact, I added the Neutra Salt system from Volvo, instead.

Don't count on the thermostat staying open for long if the engine is off. Without hot water being circulated through the system, the cold water from the hose will close the stat quickly.

I have this connected to my engine:

I have a hose connection mounted at the stern just above the ski rose eye. I turn on the garden hose and start the engine...run it about 5 min while I start putting the covers on.
I had it installed when I repowered last year. Had one problem. I developed a leak at the raw water pump. It only leaked when I had the garden hose hooked up and on. No leak when engine was running without garden hose on. The mechanic said it was a bad raw water pump. He replaced it under warranty.

I use a flush pro on my ski boat, which is used 100% in brackish water, and kept on a lift. It allows you to run the boat on the lift (I do have a 1/2 closed cooling system too though).

Read the reviews on the link you provided. Product is junk and the only bigger complaint I have on the quality of the product was the piss poor customer service. Your much better off making your own.

reviews are sometimes misleading - sometimes just the negative reviewers write in. I've own the boat since new in 2000, and put it in the day I brought the boat home, never an issue. third ski boat that I have had using them.
