Freeport to Hampton Bays

This is a good reminder that safe distance is really necessary, especially in passages like this. We have Point Pleasant canal (during the traffic hours there's nothing pleasant about it, other than nice houses). It's narrow and long, takes about 20min to pass. Once you're in you really don't want to turn back. Periodically, it's rough enough to be filled with white caps, add about 3-5kts current and it's a lot of fun. One time I had to go through it on one engine at night on my 320DA.

Next time try it with the gates closed. It's a lot easier to pass, but you'll need some help from the crew at the bow to hold the lines.

From what you describe I probably would have done 4000 rpms!!! LOL

Todd, I know you're only joking, but keep in mind that your boat is a lot heavier and has twins. It's no big deal when you use common sense. As I told you earlier I've gone through the locks on my 320DA and is was fine with open and closed gates. Closed gates was much easier, just took a bit extra time.

My cruise through the open locks.. A little to much power?

Watch the moriches bay area read prev post and go to the link for boaters Ed.com very tricky? But once you enter the inlet you have to head west (no wake zone a soon as you come out of inlet into the bay) if you keep heading north through inlet you will find yourself in very shallow water, right before going under the bridge you have to cut up north north east (at cost guard station) just make sure you stay in the channel very shallow outside even a little bit. then east to the canal. Have your lines out for the locks if there closed if not b ready for a strong current as ALEX told me use as much power as you need to press through the open locks to stay comfortable. Kinda narrow. Once your out the great paconic is very Deepwater for the most part.

Oh yea on the north side of Robbins island there is a nasty sand bar do watch your channel up there as well good luck and enjoy its a nice ride allot of cool real estate

I do apologize scratch that I was thinking you wee running the ocean. Do check the moriches bay part. But once you come out of the no wake after all the houses entering shinnecock bay its very well marked you have to head up north then east then under bridge then up north north east again at coast guard station. I'm pretty inexperienced and I did fine in shinnecock bay so I'm sure you will b fine good luck

I’ve read the posts regarding Moriches inlet. I’m pretty familiar with the area but haven’t been out that way yet this year. (That is where I took my sig pic. You can see the CG building in the background.) I should be good up to West Hampton, after that it is new territory for me. Everything looks marked out well on the charts. As of now I am planning to go south of Robbins Island. Looks like there is plenty of water there, does that sound about right?

yup sounds exactly right great paconic bay is an awesome place to boat tons of deep water I've gone as far as jessups neck last weekend (the peninsula just south of Robbins island.) After that it got foggy so turned around but up to that I know its fine
