I'm running from Freeport to the great paconic bay does anybody have any idea of how long it takes running inland I estimated about hours with the no wake zones? Does anybody have any caution areas to watch out for? and anybody know were I can get info on lock times for shinnecock inlet? Thank you

Jonathon,

When I did the trip on my 320DA it took me 2hrs30min from Shinnecock Lock to Watch Hill. No worries about the schedule of the locks I've gone there on both occasions (locks opened and when they were closed). Either way is fine and fun to pass. Your two primary areas of concern are Moriches and Shinnecock Bay. I'll try to look for my post I did on the trip which included the details.

Going pass Moriches is very different this year. You need to head to the inlet staying on the south side of the island and follow the channel around the island. There isn't a navigatable passage straight thru Moriches bay anymore. Also, IMO, they leave the locks open much longer than they should. At times, it can be a very strong rip coming at you. Should you encounter this condition, use as much power as you need to maintain control of your vessel and don't worry about your wake. Once you clear the locks, then you can slow down.

Thank your very much any info would be appreciated.

Thank you also I do hear moriches is a big trickey I had somebody tell me right before a bridge (not sure witch one) you have to head due South then east then back up north? Its this correct or just story telling? I have been through the locks at the time of strong currents and it its quiet unforgiving. I asked about times so I can try to time my arrival at either closed locks or 2 hours before or after so I don't have to deal with it. Still a little new to my boat so not quiet sure about that yet....

But again thanks to both of you and Alex have fun atmyc and block I hear ItS beautiful there maybe next year I can join.

Happy boating

Moriches bay is real tricky. Last year we went out the Moriches inlet and back in Shinnecock

Not sure about doing the path you describe near any bridge but that is pretty much what you need to do at the inlet, south-east, then east, then north......

Hmmm hopefully I'll get.good.ocean conditions.and just run from Jones to shinnecock inlet but tying will tel l there calling for wind out of the west at 10 so that's at my back witch is good, but 2 to 4 footers for 3 hours seems like not so much fun. But we will c

I just peeked at my charts again and it has a channel running north of the island... Is this the Chanel you were saying its no longer in use? And saying I need to head south east keeping the island to my east then east with the island to my north then north East with the island to my west south west? Then continue with the normal markings on the charts?

Jonathon, here's the link (post 118): http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/26021-The-Long-Island-Loop-–-Points-of-Interest/page12

As you may know, the problem with Morriches is that the shoaling changes almost every year. Last year or two ago there was a dredging project, but it sounds like think have changed. I would contact local TowBoatUS and/or CG for new coordinates of the buoys. Even though the main focus is Moriches, I would ask about Shinnecock Bay skinny water areas.

Good luck.

I have been investigating this route recently too as I may run inside to MYC. The channel straight through Moriches is gone. You need to head down the east cut toward the inlet then back up the west cut. I understand that it is marked with two green cans on each cut but they are not on the charts. I would call Seatow or the CG right there for better info.

I found some good info on this site:

I guess they block the site here. Fill in the astericks with b o a t e r e d.

Good Luck!!

Thanks guys both those links are exactly what I was looking for.
td that page was extra helpful with the pic of the guys track. ALEX as for shinnecock bay I'm pretty familiar with it as I grew up out there on my uncle a boat and it is pretty well marked. Well wish me luck. Thanks again guys

Well I made it!! Went out Jones inlet got my a$$ kicked for about an hour and went back in fire island inlet and stayed inland. And of coarse when I got to morichase inlet got myself into a little situation in about 2 feet of water but nothing to bad . caught it just in time.gets very trickey over there as I was warned. Finally got to go through the locks. That was pretty cool. Also went through when they were open and a very strong head current and a 40 ft formula heading the other way making a very large wake.. That was a little nerve racking.. But again as i was warned by ALEX i ran through at about 3000rpm. Total trip time 6 hours going and on the way home had great sea conditions so we ran out shinnecock inlet right into a school of dolphins! When does that happen off long island. and of coarse I was in such amazement I didn't take any pics... But got home in just over 4 hours. Again thanks everybody for your help

Sounds like you had fun and exciting trip, and most importantly a safe one. Good catch and recovery on the depths playing trick on you at Moriches. As a rule of thump (as you saw from my other posts/thread) approach the area at the high tide in order to minimize the risk of grounding. I'm glad you managed the canal fine, but I'd say that 3000RPMs is a bit overkill. You should have plenty of control at about 1500-2000RPMs range. The more you run through the canals the more comfort level you'll get to go a bit slower.

Cheers,
Alex.

I arrived at moriches right around mid tied. Just ended up going of coarse a little. :) and I do agree 3k was def over kill but between the formulas wake and the current and skinny passage I was just a little uncomfortable so better safe than sorry.

Yea it Was hairy my parents were on land watching and they warned me Brit got there of the conditions and they said 2 boats following another boat almost lost it the first boat got spun around aahs the following boats had no choice but to proceed she said it was very close.glad I want there for that
