I have a 98 400 sedan bridge and it looks like the starboard rudder shaft packing needs tightened. Having looked in there I can't imagine how one gets to it. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Removing the exhaust tube will give you enough access to climb back and work on it. I have not done the job first hand, but remember reading it can be done in the water.
I did it in the water. I only needed to remove the generator battery and I was able to go in head first and just fit enough under the generator exhaust tube to loosen the nuts and add two rings of packing cord. Removing the generator exhaust hose from the muffler is very easy. You could also remove that and tie it up higher out of the way to give you more clearance if you need it.
