Forgot to put additive in diesel tanks before layup

Biocide in the tank is intended to kill SRB Sulphate Reducing Bacteria. If you get water in your tank they do well and build colonies in the tank and feed on the sulphur in the fuel. They build a shell over top of the colony. Their waist is an acid that can eat a hole in your tank. Adding a biocide will kill them. Will you land up with holes in your tank by spring it depends on if you got SRBs in your tank and if you have water in your tank. Adding a biocide now can only do good even if it does not mix with the fuel as long as it settled to the bottom and kills any bugs you have. With low sulphur fuel there is less food for SRBs.

Ask your yard if they treated at haul out? Many do as standard operating procedure. If it's treated, I would not be too concerned about low fuel level. Just double dose in the spring and run as much fuel through her as you can. Just by using your boat, you will filter the fuel. Diesels return as much or more to the tank than they burn. Just be sure your biocide and your stabilizer, don't double boost the cetane level - ask what's in the bottles. I usually double dose my first fill up of the season, then run regular doses at each fill up throughout the season. I use Diesel Shok (so?). Used on on several boats for several years each. It sucks up the water and is a really nice product (no affiliation). I also make sure I don't put last seasons fuel in my tank at the fuel dock at the beginning of Spring...

Any diesel owners familiar of the brand Biobor ? Our local eastmarine (westmarine changed to it) have BIOBOR® JF for fuel biocide treatment and Biobor MD diesel treatment to improve the performance and efficiency of any diesel engine and no other diesel fuel treatment products.

Would they do as said in their website and worth to buy?

TIA

Biobor JF is an excellent biocide. I've used it for years in both the boat and in farm/equipment fuel storage.

The other product does what you need as a diesel additive in that it stabilizes, adds cetane and lubricity. I don't use it so I really have no first hand experience with it...........I use Power Service Diesel Kleen because I use enough that I buy it in concentrated form so it is more cost effective. Biobor is a well known top of the line supplier of additives so there is no reason to doubt their performance claims.

Also, I suspect you are getting regular diesel in Turkey and not the LSD or ULSD (low sulfur diesels) we get here in the US. But, if you do use either of the low sulfur fuels you should be adding a Lubricity Improver to your fuel every time you buy fuel. I use this:

Stanadyne is one of the largest manufacturers of diesel pumps and injectors and their additives are very good.

Great thanks Frank for your quick and detailed answer.

Then I'm gonna use them as I'm filling the tanks tomorrow. Stanadyne isn't available here as the nearest place to buy is Italy if I'm not mistaken.

We have here regular diesel used in agricultural field and low sulfur diesel named "Euro diesel" sold for cars and also in my marina but can't tell you if it is just low or ultra low grade of diesel.

Thanks again.

Just curious about what the racors with large sediment bowls are for?

You cannot tell, and that is the problem. Your fuel seller is supposed to know what he is selling you, if he doesn't, then all it takes is a quick call to the fuel distributor for your fuel retailer. If you cannot determine what the sulfur content is, or if it is lower than 1000 ppm, then you need to be using a Lubricity enhancer like the one I referenced in the previous post.

You might want to contact your Yanmar Servicing dealer and ask him what Yanmar is recommending for reduced sulfur fuels in their engines. Your engines were produced while the US standard was 500 PPM of sulfur so Yanmar may have designed your engines to handle the low sulfur content down to that level.

Frank thanks again for your interest.
Will call both and ask them.
