Ford Truck Towing Capacity Site

Nope, just drive em. My dad is a big Ford guy and was the Ford brand was drilled into my head at an early age :) He restores old Fords now for fun. I was almost dis-owned for buying a vette to fix up.. :)

Always good to be reminded of an 11000 lb towing capacity....:grin:Long live the Powerstroke!

I still been trying to find some solid numbers on my truck but i believe i have 10,500 capacity, now does that mean 10,500 with or without the truck weight? After truck weight I think its about 6600lb capacity if thats how its reported.

Jack,

Look it up in your owner's manual. I was looking for at half ton Chevys/GMCs crew cabs with the 6.0 liter vortec/max trailering package. Depending the on the cab configuration whether or not it's equipped with 2WD or 4WD, this combo is rated to tow up to 10,500 lbs. As I recall this was for the 2wd version, base model/driver only. Tow capacity is reduced by options and passengers. Also look up your gross combination (combined) weight rating (GCW or GCWR). This the max weight of your truck and trailer. It's also the better indicator of your trucks capablity is. If you have time go weigh your truck and see what its empty weight is. You'll also find Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and other useful info. in the manual. Also, check your hitch. I think (but am not sure) they still come with with standard class III/IV hitch even when you get the max. trailering package. In any event, you shouldn't have a problem towing a 185 sport, but you already know this.

FYI, some frown upon towing 10,000 lbs. with a half ton truck.

towing capacity does not mean much, it is really just made for warranty issues, you cant put an exact number behind a truck, for example you can be hauling a box or something aerodynamic like a boat they can weigh the same but towing they fell completely different, length of trailer, tongue weight, temperature, speed, weather, hills vs flat land, and the most important and most significant is the driver, and many more factors go into how much you should tow, the real towing capacity can be below that given capacity by the manufacturer or above it depending on many factors which vary depending on the driver, load, etc.

Bah. Doesn't include the Navigator for towing, but the site does for other fleet stuff. Then there's this problem.

IE? Really? Wonder how much Microsuck paid them for that.

Two things to consider when towing ANYTHING.
1. Weight distribution. This affects the handling at speed.
2. The most important...The ability to stop.

A half ton properly equiped can handle a 10,000 lb trailer. This is encluding trailer brakes and weight distribution hitch settup and larger weight rating tires.

Also keep in mind the longer the wheelbase of the tow vehicle the better the handling at speed.

As far as the powerstroke or the other diesels on the market, think of this. In the 60s and 70s you could get a 3/4 and 1 ton truck with a 6 cylender. You were not the first up the hill but you got there. The most important thing is to stop it once rolling. The diesels are nice but how often do you tow with them to justify the cost. My .02
I tow a 30ft RV and now my boat with either one of the 3
1989 Chevy Suburban 2wd 350 CID 1/2 ton
1980 Chevy K-20 4x4 425 CID...Not a typo...not a chevy motor 3/4 ton
1975 Ford F-250 4x4 360 CID with 4 speed manual 3/4 ton
All set up for Electric brake with class III hitches.

I work for a Ford, GMC and Volvo truck dealer, all three of those OEM's use mickeysoft for everything, which means I have to use IE to work in those sites, it is the only one that works completely.

The nice thing about being a consumer is sending email messages to corporate sales HQ with a message like:

Dear Sir or Madam,

While reviewing data on your product's website, I found that neither Safari nor Firefox were able to browse your website. Fortunately, <your competition> does support Mac and Linux users. I was able to get the information I needed there. Sorry that you lost a sale. You may wish to consider that not all of your potential customers are going to submit to your IT standards.

I usually get an email or phone call back to which I respond "Too late! Better luck next time I'm in the market."

Best regards,
Frank

I got the warning as well using Firefox 3.0.6 - just clicked on OK and used the site with no problems. I wont stop buying Ford just because they have a goofy admin or web policy. You can also use this site to get your owner's manuals and updates.
