I was down in my bilge this last weekend and found one bilge float switch that was not working correctly. I've decided I should probably replace all three for piece of mind.

I am considering installing the Water Witch instead of the Rule switches. But the OEM Rule switches are mounted on the bilge floor (horizontal surface) where as the Water Witch looks like it needs a vertical surface to mount to.

Do you guys mount these to the stringers? Or fab up some kind of bracket? I'd like them to be as low as possible in the bilge...for obvious reasons.

Thanks in advance for any creative thoughts!

I don't have a Water Witch on this boat but I had put them on my 52. I just zip tied them to the rule switch.

The mount the same direction. Actually, you could mount them either way. I use the water witch 230 model

Did you mount the unit sensors-down or sensors-up? I was assuming neither horizontal orientation would be ideal - sensors down and the pumps will run with just a trickle of water, sensors-up and it'll take over an inch of water to turn them on. Does that make sense?

Sensors up. A rule switch takes over an inch as well.

In my sump box, I have it mounted on the sidewall in the lower step-down portion and they are designed to run several seconds after the water is below the switch... FYI, I was watching it this past weekend and there was quite a bit of water coming back into my sump box after the pump shutoff. I pulled the check valve out and you could see straight through it, so yes it was shot and a new one installed.

Thanks for the replies guys! Good stuff. I'll proceed with these buggers. Cheap insurance.

I’m just curious how did you mount it to the sidewall? I thought that would be a good idea but wasn’t sure I wanted to drill holes in the sidewalk.

I saw some photos here on CSR where folks mounted the witch to the sidewall of a sump box by screwing all the way through, sealing with 5200. A pretty low risk penetration? :)
