Item 8 - Sound Producing Devices / Bell:

To comply with Navigation Rules and for distress signaling purposes all boats must carry a sound producing device (whistle, horn, siren, etc.) capable of a 4-second blast audible for ½ mile. Boats larger than 39.4 ft. are also required to have a bell (see Navigation Rules.) Under a recent change, a vessel 12 meters (39.4 ft) to less than 20 meters (65 ft) is no longer required to carry a bell on board. This applies ONLY to those vessels operating in International Waters. International waters for the purposes of the Navigational Rules are those waters seaward of the Line of Demarcation. For those vessels operating in Inland Waters, a bell is STILL REQUIRED. .................................................... Sea Ray is smart...might as well make it a nice looking one, right?

Very smart...the new 38DA is listed as 39.0'....they save a few hundred per boat NOT having to install bells on those boats......

Bridog,

As strange as it is, a bell is required.

Vessel 26 feet to less than 40 feet long and under engine power A bell and a hand or power whistle audible for one mile.

Its not well known, except by the Marine Patrol :smt001

Probably because you guys get a TON of fog up those parts.....

waterlogged is right, a strange NH law.

When we loaded up our new 30' boat this spring we found a bell, still in the box inside on of the cabinets. I thought, how nice a present from the dealer, maybe I'll hang it in my den.

Months later, I'm getting a voluntary safety inspection and the MP asks for a bell. I rummage thru the deepest, darkest storage and there it is, still in the box. Good thing I never got a round to hanging it in the den. BTW you don't have to mount the bell, you just have to have it.

an odd law in today's day in age.

i guess i will refrain from mounting anything into the fiberglass.

My 370 DA has one......... I use it to remind me to take a chug on my beer ......EVERY time it rings.

You must be standing at the helm with a hammer...just in case the seas are calm......and the bell doesn't ring on its own..

It was foggy around my house last night but I did hear any bells. I drank anyway, just to be safe. When I woke this morning, I could hear bells :smt101. They are just starting to go away :smt043
