Flywheel Replacement Choices

The flywheel on one of my 4.3 MPI's is severely damaged from rust. It looks like the OEM 804913 is about $650. I have found a replacement from Michigan
Motors for $200. Has anyone else ever used an aftermarket flywheel?

Just how "severely damaged" are we talking about? Surface rust should not be a problem. So as long as the teeth are in tact and you can bolt a coupler to it... it should be fine.

Man.... Typically a flywheel can be resurfaced but I don't know about that one. Where did the water exposure come from? Make sure you know why this happened and correct it before going further. Then I would take it to a machine shop and ask about resurfacing. It doesn't have to be perfect as you are not putting a clutch disk on it....you just want to clean it up for the coupler.

Yep, that's pretty bad. I would replace it, and as Shawn says, fix the water problem.

look for a used one.......same as 5.0 and 5.7 mpi.....I have one here, but shipping would kill the deal - aftermarket wont be a problem - as someone said, check summit, jegs or even rock auto or a car/truck junkyard - its just a regular GM manual trans flywheel for a 1 piece rear main seal motor.....a 90s or 2000s pickup would be a source.....

Found a very clean used one. It's ordered and on the way. The leak was a hose above the starter. It looks like it leaked down and was pulled into the flywheel housing and slung around keeping a good supply of water to do the damage. Thanks for the suggestions and info.
