I never really thought about before I installed it but, Is there a side choice for the flywheel to be installed, decided by if it's an inboard or not?

The reason I ask is because when I installed the flywheel, dampner, transmission, and new starter, upon testing the starter will not engage the flywheel. Upon inspection, the stater pinion gear and nose cone is not long enough to reach the teeth on the flywheel. The teeth on the flywheel are on the front edge on the flywheel, not the towards back. I could understand if the starter were mounted in the normal stern drive or automotive fashion, this would be right, but. Did I simply install the flywheel backwards?

I think I have the wrong flywheel. Anyone got the one I need laying around?

I was just doing a lil research on my starter just spinning and from what i have read its possible for the ring gear to be mounted on either side. Might be a solution for you but check with someone that knows for sure.

Thanks for the reply, however, after extensive research into the matter, I came to find out the flywheel has a groove cut in it for the ring gear to fit in. It was easy to remove. Just a few taps with a drift and small sledge. Just as easy to reinstall. Put flywheel in freezer the night before. Put ring gear in oven at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, falls right onto the flywheel. But to install on the opposite side would require someone to turn down (lathe) the opposite side. Found used flywheel instead for $120.00
