How often should one use the Perko Flush Kit ?? every time you come in or ?

Thanks.....

I had the Perko flush kits in my boat, but had them changed out to the Merc kits. Here is a pic of what happened when I used it to flush the engine after getting back to the dock.

In addition to the problem of them cracking in half, my mechanic told me he has seen the check valves in the Perkos go bad, allowing air to be pulled into the system when you are running the boat. When he took mine out (only 2 years old), the flush hose appeared to be collapsing under a vacuum.

As for your question, I flush every time I get back to the dock, but only for a few minutes. I figure that the thermostat is already open so I don't need to run it as long. I also use Salt Away or some other alternative. Since I can never get the mixer for Salt Away to work too well without leaking, I got a pressure washer detergent injector which doesn't leak.

Thanks for the info on the when, and how long to do flush.

This is what I did...From all my tests, it works very well on metal. I'm going to make a few kits this winter if your interested. Here's a video of my boat started after 5 days of sitting. Notice how much suds come out...

To answer your question yes we flush every time we come in or within a few days if we get in late.

I have a Volvo Penta kit adapted to a Groco 1 1/4" full flow T adapter shut off valve inline with the raw water hose pickup on ours using Saltaway.

I know several folks with the Perko kit 2 out of the 3 have replaced them due to cracking, I'd keep a close eye on it looking for any cracks around the screw heads.

Before the Volvo kit was installed I looked at the Mercruiser kit it was only able to be used on raw water cooled engines ours is fresh water cooled engines with the engine off so it won't work the way I wanted to flush with Saltaway.

Here's a link on iboats discussing the mercruiser flush system.

I watched MNM99's posts when he built it NICE setup.

Same thing happened three weeks ago to a friend of mine. It almost sank his boat. It is a good thing he woke up and heard the bildge pump in the middle of the night. I think perko should consider themselves lucky there hasn't been a law suite yet due to loss of property or life. All things considered, they should put out a recall! Poor choice of material for a clasp.

I wasn't going to say anything to negative on my first post but if you have one installed I'd get rid ASAP 1 of the boats at our marina would have sunk if someone hadn't noticed the boat listing to starboard about 6". The owner came in late the night before didn't plug it into shore power the bilge pumps ran all night till about noon when the batteries went dead, the marina was able to get a large pump going to save it till they could haul it out at 4:00 p.m. when the tide was high enough. It took on about 12" of salt water in the bilge you know the story from there new starter, alternator etc plus a fine by the USCG for pollution he had a mess of oil in the bilge from water in one engine due to a loose dipstick on the block. Total cost to repair with fines was over $12,000.

The perko flush kit plastic had cracked at one end perko claimed it was installed wrong with to much pressure on the hose clamp. It was 1 year old before it cracked.

He sold the boat 2 months later without disclosing it to the broker this ended up in court.

Be careful here. A garden hose at 45-55 psi does not usually flow enough water to cool an 8.3L diesel engine. Besides, the Perko device is limited to fitting a 1-1/4" hose and I suspect the QSC has a 2" inlet hose.

If all you are doing is using the Perko flush adapter to inject a salt neutralizer then the idea is good but the device isn't. I would not want a plastic fitting between my seawater pump and the engine.

Do Not buy the Perko flush plastic crap.
I had, key word had, one on my Chris Craft. The plastic cracked in the second year of service. I noticed my boat engine overheating one day, out on the lake. I figured the impeller was bad in my water pump. Nope. After I disassembled the pump and found a perfect impeller, I had to look for some other issue. Yes, I went to all the trouble of pulling the pump, to have to reassemble it for nothing.
I noticed the cracked Perko flush fitting, pulled it out (threw it in the trash) and hooked the inlet hose back to the strainer. Walla, no overheat issue.
Shame on Perko for selling that junk.

Well with any flush system other then Perko or with Perko, how would you use the salt away product with the unit or any good unit for
flushing? or is using salt away not needed with any unit.....

Flushing with fresh water is always good. Flushing with fresh water and salt away is even better. Attach one of these and you should be good. http://www.saltawayproducts.com/MixerPage.htm I would rather flush with fresh water every time, but the hassle of opening the hatch , connecting the hose ect turns me away. Much easier just pushing a button..

Thanks, so it can be used with a product flush unit like perco??

SaltAway isn't necessary water will work, I use SaltAway to keep any build up of salt deposits and minerals dissolved. Been using it for 5 years just had the risers checked they look almost new, the gaskets had zero build up on them.

This is very similar to what I have installed.
http://www.quickflushvalve.com/io-engines.html

With a Volvo Penta kit that I only used the the portion that gets the hose adapter up to the dip stick.
http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/engine_flush.html

When I come in I have a hose already setup with the SaltAway adapter to plug it in.

1) shut off engine
2) hook up unit turn to water on only
3) start engine turn unit to rinse ( make sure engine is up to operating temp, or it's a waste of time and money )
4) run engine for 22 seconds ( I've timed it that's when the foam starts coming out )
5) shut engine off turn unit to off
6) disconnect unit

optional
Spray boat off with any SaltAway left in the unit before leaving marina.

I also have a 2" wide red flag attached to the steering wheel with a clip that says "Do not start engine check valve position before removing"

Whats the salt away adapter look like? like the unit that comes with the salt away package on amazon?
Thanks.....

sorry. I know I will sound inexperienced here - but why do I need these kits? My boat is moored 24/7 with a closed cooling system. Am I missing something?

The closed cooling system is one of two cooling systems on your boat. The heat absorbed by the coolant on the closed side is dissipated in flowing sea water on the second (raw water) side. Think of the raw water side like a radiator on your car. The Salt Away would treat the raw water side of your system.

HTH

And that unit above you can use along with the Perco or another more longer lasting unit?? with the similar workings.??

Yep anything that connects to a garden hose or you can put quick connect adapters on it. Someone makes a hose connector that is mounted through the gunnel but I didn't want to drill anymore holes in the boat. I believe it's Seachoice.
