Flir M232 versus Sionyx Nightwave

My biggest concern was the limited field of view but the PTZ on the Flir should help. I also use my radar, charts and spotlight when needed and while I agree the lower end Flir’s like the M232 has it’s limitations I think it’s worth the price to have another tool integrated onto my MFDs. I’ll let you know if I still feel that way in the Spring.

By the way I asked one of my contacts at Garmin to find out why my radar failed. I reminded him again this week and he said he’ll find out but they are all busy with year end.

Rob,
We also find ourselves en route to a restaurant at night every weekend and for that reason installed a M232 this past spring to aid me in our travels. I too feel the field of view is too small, so I leave it on auto pan and cruise comfortably at 18-knots with the cameras image on one 7612 MFD and my route on the other 7612.

I love it, other than finding it difficult to make accurate on (touch)screen adjustments to the M232 while underway when need be, so I'll be adding FLIR's JCU3 joystick controller to the helm this spring.

Thanks Steve.
I didn’t know it had auto pan but it sounds like that would be helpful. What is the range on the auto pan?

I installed a Flir M232 last year, It was a game changer at night.
I have used it in the fog with simular pictures is attached.
It was plug and play, one of the easiest installations I've ever done.
It is worth every penny.
I attached some pictures,

i appreciate the comments and pictures. It’s good to get another endorsement for the M232.
Thanks

Man that is a lot narrower field of view then I thought. Is that zoomed in at all?

While it is narrow I believe it will still be a helpful navigation tool for nighttime boating. My thinking was this will help me see unlit buoys or other objects in water at night I would need to avoid. To me it’s something I will use in conjunction with radar and chart plotter.

I have used this in thick fog going though Moriches with good success.
I was in daytime thick fog ( could not see the bow ) going up to harts cove in Moriches and come across a kayak fishing in the main channel and was able to go around the kayak to my starboard side by about 2', I remember passing him and looking down at him shaking my head saying to him why are you fishing in this main channel in this thick fog.
I did not pick up this kayak on my radar.

Now that you mention it I remember seeing your post in another thread last year.
Thanks
