Flat tire on trailor!

Ok so i decide to take out the boat last saturday. I get the boat all ready but when i step back i notice my whole boat is on a "gangsta lean" and im like hmmm... so i look and what do you know flat tire! So i assumed that it was since i didnt take it out for a month that it might of lost air.. So i turn on the shop compressor and fill the tire up. It fills up witn no leaks. Then when i go to put on the cap i notice when i move the valve side to side its shooting air out of it..

Now the question is...

It looked dry rotted, but the trailor and boat and the whole thing is like 5 months old. Did salt water eat away the plastic on the valve stem? weird.

On a better note i just jacked it up and the tire shop didnt even charge me to put a new valve on it and its fixed now.. It was just weird that a NEW part would go bad so soon.

Could have been hit and bent on something. I replace mine with the metal ones (like the truckers use) never had one go bad.

I don't recommend this (metal chrome valves) if your trailering in Saltwater.
Just keep checking the valves every 6 mos and you should be good.

Try getting a nail on your second trip... most shops won't patch the tires... found one that did, but it didn't take the first time. Spare has been on the trailer since then, with the original rim and tire sitting in the bed of the truck. The shop did re-patch, but don't want to take the chance...

how much are these tires that go on the trailer, they cant be that expensive are they?

Last tire I bought was about $120 for the tire (trailering tire) and $85 for the galvanized rim. I have repaired bent rims before and if you are worried that you might mess it up, most repair shops will repair it for you.

BTW, Don't use regular car tires and think you are saving money... you're not... trailer tires are multiple ply (twice or more as many ply as a normal car tire). Also, no need to pay the extra $$ to balance trailer tires... the boat doesn't care...
