FL: Jumping ray kills Keys boater

I know. I'm here now. Freak accident. Maybe fell back and hit her head.

Two years ago I was wade fishing on a flat in about 3 feet of water. An eagle ray came out of the water and cleared the surface by 4 feet while coming right at me. He was probably 50lbs or so with what I would estimate as a 5 foot wing span. I ducked down and he hit the water in front of me and his momentum pushed him into me but he only scrapped my leg with his wing.

At the time I remember the fear I had of what would be big enough to cause such a large ray to leave the water. I had visions of a big bull shark trying me out for lunch.

BTW, it was about 1/2 an hour before dark so that added to the drama. Needless to say I packed it in for the night.

This had to be a freak accident, the odds are against this type of thing ever happening.

I was diving off the coast of costa rica and as we were getting ready to jump in, a manta ray breached the water right in front of the boat. Sucker was so big it would have probably killed all of us if it landed in the boat.

Saw one report that said the needle ended up in her neck. But it still alluded to the cause of death being the head trauma. I haven't shown that to my wife yet. Im not sure how she'll handle it. I think Steve Irwin was the beginning of the Rays attempt to takeover the world.

My Dad, who lives on his boat in Marathon, actually witnessed this. He didn't realize the woman died until he read the story later. Freaky stuff.
