I got a pretty deep scratch to my fiberglass this summer. Can I just apply gel coat to this and sand it down, or do I have to fill this with fiberglass somehow?

While that can certainly be repaired, it's going to require more than just gel coat. Is it all the way through? At a minimum you need to grind the loose mess out, lay in some chopped strand fiberglass followed by fairing compound. If it is all the way through or close, you need to put some cloth layers on it. Then sand, shape and gel coat. Honestly, might be a job for a professional unless you are comfortable working with fiberglass and gel coat.

This video will give you an idea of what is involved to repair it correctly:

+1 on boatworks! Guy has great videos. I tackled something similar. At the end of the day I went with Chop Strand,West Systems and their 407 before i put down the gel coat.

If you can look inside you may need to replace fiberglass on the inside also.

YIKES!! I would let a pro handle this, as it looks like inside work is also needed. This looks bad enough to sink a boat.

Thanks for inputs. I'll have a pro have a look. The fiber glass here should be relatively thick so I don't think any inside work should be needed, but I have no expertise in this field.
