Pre fished from the port of Harbor Beach to the south tournament boarder on Friday (Forestville tower). Beautiful day with mixture of fog and sun. Water temp was 46-48 cold and gin clear water all the way to White Rock as we checked 10 to 100+fow. Then we found some slight stained water in 20 fow and temp jumped to 54. Everything looked good, but no fish. Pretty frustrating. Ended the day with a nice laker, a steelie and a coho. The laker and steelie were stuffed full of smelt in the 3-4 inch range. The big hint here was the fish we caught hovered in the 40 ft range.
Game day brought fog in the morning with less than 1/8 mile visibility (Amen for radar). North to North-East winds started us out with 2fters and the lake built fast to 4-6's with heavy rains until we pulled lines at 12:30pm. An absolutely miserable day to put it lightly.
Anyway, water temp dropped to 47-48 degrees everywhere we looked. We started along the wall in HB with nothing to show for it. As the lake was building, we moved out to 50 fow when the 2 color lead line with an orange/sliver spoon fired with a small steelie hooked up. We landed that fish and just got that line reset when it fired again with a nasty 15.41# Huron king. After that excitement, we proceeded to pop some nice lakers in the 6-13# range on gold BTI and 12" flashers with gold flies bouncing bottom. One more steelie took an orange bomber 150 back on a flat line to give us 7 fish for the day.
We finished 9th out of 39 boats and we are pretty darn proud!
Best yet, we NEVER LOST ONE HOOKED FISH in 2 days of fishing! Nice big VMC hooks, ultra sharp along with smart rod, net and boat handling were key to boating 100% of the hits.
The wind, waves and cold have sucked the life out of me. We have some pretty tough fisherman over here that stuck out some of the worst conditions I've ever fished. The wind, waves and rain were absolutely relentless.
My crew was my buds Jack, Andy and my dad. Each guy did a spectacular job from Jack's white knuckled boat handling to Andy's determination to keep changing lines around until something worked. Dad did all other duties from tracking down lures to keeping the deck running smoothly. Together we had a blast and clicked like a precision watch.
Here's a couple pics:
9th place catch for 53.08 lbs
Biggest fish of the tourney, a 19.10 King kong!
The board:
