First timer, I think I have not turned on a water valve or pump. Help!

87 Sea Ray SundancerAfter putting my boat in the water this year I filled the water tank and ran the sinks to flush. However I noticed after doing so I had standing water in the bottom step for the cabin below the driver’s bench above. I opened the little door under the cabin and there was water. I used a shop vac and sucked out the water. I filled the tank again and had the same problem. I don’t know if I didn’t turn on a valve or something that lets the water into the holding tank or something like that. I bought the boat last summer and didn’t have this problem. The mechanic at the marina winterized the boat, but I don’t know what he may he have turned on or off. Sorry for my ignorance. I’m learning there’s a big learning curve with boating.

I am right behind you with the learning curve...but...it isn't a valve to turn on...it is a leak. How much water are you talking about? Either with the drainage from the sinks, etc. or with the holding tank/plumbing.

When you turn on the fresh water pump, does it build and hold pressure? That will help you determine if it is the plumbing, the drainage or the tank side of the water pump.

Again, far from an expert.

There's no valve to turn on to allow water into the holding tank - there's a hose that goes directly from the deck fitting to the tank. So... possibilities...

Without knowing the layout of your boat, these are generalities:

-- The hot water tank drain valve is still open (would have been opened for winterizing)
-- A water line or fitting is broken/ruptured
-- A drain hose is broken/ruptured/disconnected

Time to get familiar with that new boat! :)

Petro, i have had a few model years like yours but each different. You not say what boat you got. 23, 25, 268, 270, more specifics and may be able to hel.

I don't know your boat at all ...but: Did you run water into the shower drain? Possible the shower sump pump isn't working?

I know the 87’s very well, “the bottom step for the cabin” is way to port and no way “under the drivers bench above”. Are you sure when you put the plywood over the bow you didnt seal it right?

If you are referring to the area under the aft cabin at the lowest point of the hull (just forward of the bulkhead separating the engine room from the aft cabin), there is a automatic sump pump there to drain water up and out the side fitting of the boat. Water drains to that area from the floor drain in the head. That water may be coming from a water leak under the sink in the head and going down the floor drain.

With all taps closed does the system pressurize with water until the fresh water pump stops?

I believe this is exactly what is happening. Thank you!
