Looking for 2004+ SR 260 DA or similar

Boatless
Hi,

My parents are first time buyers looking at either a used (03-06) 240 or a 260DA. Though I am not around, I would like to help them out with the actual purchasing process.

I found listing of brokered boats and will send them over to see what they like.

1. Locate the boat they like
2. Make an offer on the boat (10-15% off listing price?)
3. Put a deposit down (how much of the agreed price?)
4. Hire a surveyor to assess the boat
5. Do a sea trial
6. Pay for the boat
7. Register the boat
8. Register the trailer

If I assume the following are true, I have a couple of questions:

- If they are not good in bargaining can they hire a broker to help them determine the right offer price? Or should we just do this ourselves
- It doesn't make sense to put a deposit down before doing a survey (what if the boat is full of problems), and yet its not cost effective to do a survey on every boat they see. What is practical here?
- If they see a boat that is not in the water does this mean the seller has to arrange for a sea trial? Does this happen before or after the purchase is made

Are there things my parents can do to facilitate the process if they are not familiar with it?

Also, a couple of basic questions post purchase.
- We are going to ship this boat internationally, however we would probably like to do any repairs, maintenance, or upgrades before we ship it out. Once a boat is purchased where does it make sense to keep it once these are done?
- For example, upgrade/update the GPS, detail the boat, winterize it, etc. At a local marina where the boat is stored where I assume we are going to have to continue to rent space until we arrange for a shipping company to take the boat to Baltimore where its going to be shipped internationally
- Registration: I presume once we pay for the boat, we get a deed (just like for a car) and we use this to register for the boat and pay the sales tax
- Trailer: I presume trailer has to be insured and then registered through the DMV. When insuring the trailer do they need to boat insured? The reason why I am asking is that we are shipping the boat overseas and we are going to have it insured over there. We do need to consider the insurance for the boat before it leaves the country.

Thanks for the info in advance.
