Hi, I have purchased a 32 foot Sundancer, and am wondering if anyone has a recommendation for an insurance company that handles first time boat owners for boats of this size?? I tried unitedmarine.net and they showed "no market" for a new boat owner of this size. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Jason

Hey Jason,

I'm a first time boat owner myself. I went with Boat US Insurance and they blew Allstate and other conventional insurers out of the water. They beat Allstate alone by 40% and their deductable was $750 less to boot!

Below is a link to the insurance side of Boats US, you have to buy a membership with them ($24 annually) to get the insurance, but its worth it since many Marina's will give you discounts on fuel and mooring if your a member.

I just signed up for a new policy with these people yesterday. They were 1/2 of everyone else and the rep was very responsive and accomodating. I learned of them thru CSR. Here is the website and then the broker's email I used

BBelyea@globalmarineinsurance.com
His name is Ben and tell him David S. with the 310 sent you.
My policy for the 2001 310 that I just bought with full coverage on the boat, tender, hurricane haul out's, etc was $618

I go thorough Global Marine as well, and have done so for the past several years. This year my old insurance company exited the recreational marine business. Global had a replacement policy in place before the old company had even sent the required non-renewal notice out!

They typically want to know what your previous boating experience is - do you have any? Even if you haven't owned a boat before it makes a difference. Also - have you taken the boating safety course yet? Try your auto insurance agent - may be a bit more expensive for the first year but then you can shop around. State Farm was the best deal for me even though another company was able to beat it slightly.

I've used Boat U.S. for the past 10 years. Their rates are very competitive but more importantly their service has been top notch. My claims have been honored with very little red tape or hassel and no serious increase in premiums. This to me is a better measurement of an insurance provider than cost alone. I also agree - get tow insurance and don't pinch pennies here, I would opt for unlimited coverage. Read the policy carefully and see what "unlimited" really gets you.

Jason--
Yet another opinion: I'd go with Charter Lakes. I previously had NBOA and after checking 5 X other marine insurances companies, I found Charter Lakes to be the most inexpensive, with the more comprehensive coverage. Subsequently, I've talked to others in the Marina and most everybody I've talked to have now switched to Charter Lakes as well. If you're interested, below is their URL: http://www.charterlakes.com/

Don't forget about NBOA Marine Insurance, http://www.nboat.com/ they are a sponsor here as well as recommended by SeaRay

I was orignally with Progressive through Global Marine paying $1,108 annual premium. Got my Sea Ray Owners Club membership which you be eligible for with a 5 year old boat and got a quote from NBOA using Banker's Trust for $518 annual premium for the same coverage. NBOA has a special rate for Sea Ray owners so check them out along with the others mentioned.

Global Marine Insurance handles my marine insurance as well. All they insure are boats of all sizes so they are understand our needs and provide great service. Give them a try!

I am in the market for insurance too. I have talked to BoatUs and NBOA. They seem close in coverage. I don't mind spending an extra 100 or 200 a year for better service. I read a lot of people talk about the money they saved with that company or another but the money saved will not make up for the headaches when you go to file a claim and get a hard time. I have read good things about BoatUS being on top of their game when it comes to claims. I haven't read anything about NBOA and how they handle their claims. I am also checking into the Charterlakes. If anyone has any experience with these companies please let me know so I can make a good informed decision. Thanks.

If you look into your local US Power Squadron, members get a great insurance rate and the more courses you take through the USPS, the more discounts are available on insurance.

I have used Global Marine for the past 10yrs, fortunately I haven't had any claims. Every year I do check for lower prices and Global Marine has matched the price.:thumbsup:

Not having to file a claim is great. I'm glad you haven't had to. I have no experience at all with Global but a lot of people seem to be after the cheapest rate and not the best insurance, by no way referring to you. I know it's a good thing that we don't read more about people filing claims and how their company did, it just makes it hard deciding which one to go with. NBOA is underwritten by different companies it seems, so who knows if one underwriter is as good as the other.

Great Lakes here, they are part of Travelers Insurance. About $470 for me, very close to Boat US. I used to have USAA on my previous boat, but when we bought the 260DA they quote me thru Progressive, $1,100 (ouch!!!) for the same insurance Great Lakes quote me under $500...

Good Luck!
