Greetings all,

Here I am finally, at the age of 54, and now own my very first boat. I grew up on a lake, my father had a boat, and I have wanted one for many years. My wife and I had been talking about it for a while, early last year we bought her a new Ford Sport Trac truck, so we now had a vehicle that could at least pull a smaller boat. A couple weeks ago, we decided rather than going in debt on a new boat for our first, we would find a used boat we could pay cash for, and hopefully run it for about 3 years and see if we still wanted to stick with it, and maybe by a newer one around that time.

So earlier this week, after looking at many and deciding the one we were most interested in, we went to the lake with the seller and did a test run. It is a 1990 Sea Ray 180 Bowrider , with a 4.3 Mercruiser Alpha One drive. While the boat is older, I understand the engine is only around 3 years old and has less than 100 hours on it. That, combined with the hull looking in great shape, gel coat still has a good shine, and upholstery in very good condition, prompted us to go ahead and purchase it. It seemed to run great on the water, engine sounded very smooth, and no grinding when shifting from neutral to reverse, or forward. After pulling the boat out of the water, pulled the drain plug and no water came out to speak of.

So hopefully I made a wise choice and this boat will last those three years or so. I know buying an older boat is a roll of the dice, but decided to go ahead and take a chance with this one.

Ok sorry for rambling, wanted to give a little background.

Couple of questions:

The left trailer fender is damaged, just the plastic fender part. It is usable, but I would like to replace as it is an eyesore, it is a Shorelandr trailer with plastic formed fenders, including step pad front and back of fender. Reckon I could get a replacement for this? I am sure it is the trailer that came with the boat.

On the back of the boat, the right rear seat if I am facing forward - if I lift that cushion, underneath there is like a white plastic shell - and toward the bottom appears to be like a shaft with what looks like some kind of knob on the end. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this " tub" looking thing is?

Thanks for any tips - I am sure now that I am a boat owner, this forum will be a great resource of info for me!

Not sure about Shorelander part... give them a call. You might get fenders at Tractor Suppy... maybe replace them both to look alike.

The white plastic shell sounds like a bilge pump... turn the knob to test it.

Welcome to CSR!

Congrats on the boat! Enjoy!

I grew up on that same boat- only our was an OB. It a great size.

Welcome to the club.

we did exactly the same thing... we bought a 1986 Chris Craft 18.5' bow rider and trailer that was in excellent condition...it had been owned and maintained by a Service Manager at a local marina....we kept that boat for about 3 years and decided we kinda liked this boating thing and decided to move up a little in size and also get a boat with an on-board head and a cabin to stay overnight if we wanted to....we found our 215EC to be perfect for our needs and we have had it almost 3 years now....we can still pull the kids and grandkids on skies, knee boards, tubes etc. and have plenty of room in the cabin for two to stay overnight....our next boat will likely be in the 30' range but we will likely keep the 215EC for exploring new lakes and to use for watersports with the kids....

good luck and we hope you find you enjoy boating like we did....this forum is an invaluable source of information....if you have even basic mechanical skills you can do the vast majority of the repairs and service to your boat if you choose to do so...

you can get replacement parts for your trailer, but you may not be able to match the original parts....i like to use Eastern Marine for my trailer parts but there are other companies as well....as was stated before you could just replace both fenders if you cannot find a new one to match the original......no idea on the 'plastic tub with a shaft'....

I replaced both fenders on a shorelandr trailer for my 01 180 br. I paid $85 each for the oem fenders and they were slightly off color from the originals. I also saw some thinner plain white ones which were identical otherwise at my local trailer sales place for $25 each. I didn't get those because I figured they would flex too much under my weight and they were bright white. I'm sure you can find something locally as they seem to be pretty common. It was easy to replace them myself with the help of an impact wrench.

Thanks for the very warm welcome and tips gang, I much appreciate it!
I have no problem replacing both fenders if need be, the one damaged one is driving me crazy.

The wife and I just got back from Bass Pro getting some essentials we need, we were hoping to go to the lake this weekend but she has hurt her back earlier this week, not doing so great right now so our first outing might have to be postponed for a week - will see how she feels tomorrow and Sunday.

Love your story Cliff, whooee the idea of someday maybe having a boat with a cabin for some overnight trips certainly sounds appealing - who knows what the future might bring!

Thanks again everone, I am certainly going to enjoy this forum!

Any pics? I like to see others older bow riders.

Here are a few pics of the boat that I saved from the ad that was placed by the seller.

Thanks Cliff!
I am pleased so far - I think this boat has been well taken care of over the years. I was pleased the first time I pulled it out of the lake after being out for several hours, pulled the drain plug whilst on the ramp, and not a drop of water came out. I am taking it this morning to get a new fuel sender put in, so I will have a working fuel guage.
So far, we are having fun!

Very clean boat. Mine was, and is still, garaged. It makes a huge difference.
