Hi all, so I figured I would share our first outing experience on the local river. Overall a good first outing. It was the wife, 3 month old and our 3 year old son. The wife and I planned out how the launch and re trailering would go so we were lb the same page.

Just a bit of my background with boats. Been on rivers and lakes with the same size boat, just not mine. Never been on this river with anyone, and I got a few bits of caution areas from the marina cashier which I watched out for. I am pretty familiar with operating, acting with caution, etiquette, etc, and I don't drive like a maniac by any means.

Launched no problem
Retrieval no problem

As much as I like the fact that this is super close to our house, I don't know that we will go back because it ranges from 2.5 to 8
ft for the most part and its heavy traffic on most weekends.

Ending result, a piece of the aluminum prop about the size of a silver dollar give or take got taken off. The skeg?, the bottom most part of the outdrive had a scrap or two nothing to worry about. Obviously should have trimmed up a bit in hindsite to avoid that. I was very aware of depth at any given time. And I think they say if you are trimmed up to a certain point, 1k rpms max?

Perhaps when I moved to the side a bit to avoid what seemed like rush hour on the I290 ( aka the Eisenhower expwy in Chicago) I needed to trim up when idling while we were relaxing slowly moving up river.

Based on the fact that I was reasonably cautious and still had the said result , I don't think this river is for me. Good news is there are plenty of other options within 40 minutes to 1.5 hrs from us.

One other note to add. There were a ton of other boats big and small, vdrives, direct drives, and outdrives. Are they chewing up props as well? I would be interested to know.

In the end, a good outing getting familiar with our boat and the outdrive didn't get trashed.

The guy that sold it to us gave us one more aluminum, and then a SS vengeance if I remember correctly, so I just need to take the damaged one to a local prop shop that was highly recommeded to me.

Oh yea, the 4.3 tks gets up and goes plenty without emptying your wallet........completely. Lol

What river was it? I was at Fox this weekend. Didn't seem bad at least in morning.

Yeah the Fox. It was on saturday between 11- 3pm. I suppose it may have seemed busy to me because I have never boated there before and I am used to the IL river which is a bit wider if I remember correctly. We started at Algonquin rd and went north from there.

I'm actually looking for an 18-19ft bow rider preferably w the 4.3 v6 mercruiser. Can you post more pics of yours?

I love my 185 sport. Wish it was a little bigger but the 4.3 gets the boat up and moving easily and has good power. I swapped props for a better hole shot and pull power for wakeboarding but it will hit 50 with light cargo and a couple people on board. With the wife and three kids, it will still get up to 47 mph.

Be thankful you had the aluminium prop on instead on the SS. prop it could have been the difference dinged up prop or damaging the outdrive. The first time I found the bottom I questioned my depth find and a second later I was pumping mud with my prop.If that is the only mishap you have the first season you'll have a good boating season. If you put the SS. prop on and the performance is not any better but it back in the box and run the aluminuim they are cheaper to fix and cause less damage to lower unit if you do hit some thing.

A decent plotter/GPS will help you out, lowrance has a fairly cheap 4" model I use on this boat but with a mapping card I need for where I boat it can still get pricey. You can also use an iphone and the navionics app, it works pretty well. You can set the safety depths so you can see where you are at in relation to shallow areas at a glance.

I boat on the TN river which can go from 80' deep to 1' deep in an instant, I learned my lesson trying to boat without some kind of GPS several times when I started boating here. I tried following the guys who 'knew' where to go but in some places just a few feet over and you are dragging your prop or hitting rocks.

All the pics are our boat, except the one in the water ( I think the po snatched that pic from the internet! )

Yea, so far very pleased with the performance. We will almost always have my wife and our 2 kids on board. I will def keep the prop changes in mind.....except no ss in the river for me!

Thanks for the info. The PO warned me of the ss prop in the river etc. Thanks for the reassurance with the fact of this being my only mishap on the first outing. Looking forward to a nice long boating season next spring for sure.

cool thanks for the info. I will look into the plotter/ gps, and its good to know that the lowrance is wallet friendly. I will see what kind of app I can find for my android as well. Thx

The Navionics app is available for android, it is just as detailed as their maps for chartplotters and much cheaper.

Jeff, what are the other places nearby to Fox River to boat? I live in Barrington

Hmmm, off the top of my head. Bangs Lake wauconda, the fox river chain ( pistakee, grass, petite, channel, fox, and catherine lake. A bit further, twin lakes, lake Geneva, delevan, csstle rock, the illinois river. Lots of options from 30 minutes to 1.5 hrs depending on the amount of time you have

Thanks, I looked those up. Good to know. I'm new to Midwest so lake and river navigation is new to me.
