I was watching a fireworks display this evening from my car and it made me think of all the happy independence days I've celebrated on the water. I haven't done the DC thing since its a mad house and they don't let you north of the Wilson bridge the day of. I have seen fireworks from a few lakes, the Chesapeake bay, and the ocean. Its most special when there are 3 or 4 displays occuring at the same time and their all visible.

I also have done some very foolish things with fireworks on the boat in my younger year. Ill tell you besides from the obvious safety concerns and fire risk fireworks will damage the interior pretty bad. Its like cigarette burns on the carpet and vinyl especially from bottle rockets. I know this because I did a number on my first sterndrive runabout. I wasn't the only one either as my friends would line up with rockets ready a skier would pass by and run the gauntlet. Its amazing nobody was ever injured and looking back I feel very lucky.

Let's hear about your favorite spots where they put on a good display you can view from the boat. Stories of foolish pyro behavior would be interesting to hear about also. Anybody ever light their boat up fith fireworks? A guy who was one of the instigators had a fesival ball mortor fall down and shoot off into his boat and explode. I was never that stupid though. Again I'm amazed nobody was ever hurt.

I've grown up in the olcott/barker area and olcott's fireworks are set off from the west pier of the harbor. They close the west pier obviously, but the east pier is open along with both east and west side beaches. Ill take a pic this year earlier in day so ya can see how close your allowed to sit.

The coasties and sheriffs do a good job at keeping the boaters a set distance back but its still not far, more of an "your out of range of the largest ball should it blow at 10' instead of 150" hmm got me thinking ill see if i cant find vid from last years finale.

Bear in mind all pics and vids taken with 8 mp camera phone.

as a former professional pyrotech for Central States Pyrotechnics ...the most awesome show ever is "Thunder over Louisville"
got to help the Zambelli crew set up the barges and watched from a pilot boat.
it is the opening of derby week so it is done for the year.
and OMG could I tell you some stories of our company crew ....

Mandeville Cut on the Delta where Baron Hilton started in the 50's doing fireworks for boaters and left a trust to keep it going. They bring in a huge barge and launch from there. This year they are doing it on Tuesday night the 3rd so they probably won't have the thousand or so boats usually present.

Two places:

1. When I was a kid we would watch a huge display on Mono Lake in eastern CA. Was the greatest! Families would get together with food, kids and water toys. Now the environmental waco terrorist would even let you touch the water. let alone shoot fireworks anymore.

2. When I met the Admiral in Missouri, we took a boat out to Truman Lake and anchored out by the dam. There must have been 500-600 boats and the water cops would go around and do inspections to make sure everyone had lights. We would take a glass of wine and noodles and float in the water watching the fireworks they shot off from the dam. The first time I was in ahhh of the whole thing and she asked me why I reacted that way as if I had never seen fireworks. I told her I had not seen fireworks on 4th of July in over 20 years! She looked at me funny. I said it is daylight 24/7 in Alaska during this time and we had our fireworks during Fur Rondy in February.
