Fire Island Inlet Spring 2013

So the trip was a success. Took lindenhurst cut to state channel to jones inlet. Plenty of water the whole way, well marked and no debris noted. Seas were around 6' once got around the east jette of the inlet. Once we passed FI inlet on ocean side it was clear Jones was the right choice, Fi inlet looked shoaled and was all whitewater. Came in shinnecock inlet which was well marked and pleanty of water. I will save the fire island devistation for another post, it was really bad in areas. Boat is tied up and ready to explore the east end!

Glad to hear you had a great ride, and thanks for the info. Enjoy the east end and post some pics over the summer please!!

Way to go Russ! I'm glad it all went so well! Enjoy your new digs for the summer. Maybe we can meet up at some leg of the Northeast Flotilla this summer!

I hope the troubled spots were not next to Zach's. We're heading there for Memorial day weekend. Glad you made it safe and sound.

3' give or take 6 ", but only for about 50' distance. Noticed a few areas of shoaling areas near entrances to canals. Didnt notice allot of debris in the water which is always good.

Thanks ron the way you put that is scary lol what was you lowest reading?

Water b/w zachs and jones was fine - all deep water. I ran high tide but depth didn't drop below 8' once I got out of marine max.

That's great to hear. Thanks.

That's not good news, I was hoping to come in FI Inlet sometime this weekend on the way home.

Brian.
Call seatow or go on there facebook page.
They have hand drawn "charts" for navigating the inlet and a couple other trouble spots. They also stated that you cannot pass the dredging area in certain spots at certain times due to the piping running across the water. (I dont know if thay still stands but def worth a call) they say the sunks the pipe in between two markers but they change it depending on were they are working. Also noted on there fb page was that a couple boats already hit the pipe. If you decide to enter through ji and take the state channel there is a similar situation at the south end just after robert moses causeway. Best of luck

best of luck w new boat and a safe trip up. I would make the call dependent on sea conditions and the tide when you get close. I know someone who did FI in a 45' but had a "escort" from seatow. State channel was so easy (and since I ran it at 6am didn't slow down other than marinas and bridges) and deep water it's a good alternative. If you jump down lindy or Babylon cut you should be good to head east from there.

I had heard of some skinny water in the Lindenhurst cut after Sandy. Your post is great to hear.
Thanks
Ron

I was told the south end of the cut was low so had backed down to a crawl last 100 yards before turn west into state channel - I was on high tide but had water below me. I know the 54 dancer hit last week but he was VERY far east (tried to go east of the east/west green).

Oh boy. 1200 miles and the last 30 in my home waters could be the most difficult. I'll probably call Sea Tow for their perspective. I've seen their FB page and it didn't look too bad. I'm not crazy about coming in JI and running the state channel. If I did I'd probably take the babylon cut north.

It doesn't look like it. I went by there about two weeks ago and the place is still a wreck.
