The Coast Guard is currently seeking public input on a proposed rule change to exempt recreational boats from the fire extinguisher inspection requirements that were put in place in 2016. Comments in support of the rule change would help relieve recreational boaters from the inspection requirement.

"This proposed move would relieve owners of recreational vessels from having to adhere to NFPA 10 fire extinguisher inspection, maintenance, and recordkeeping requirements intended to apply to commercial vessels only."

"The Coast Guard proposes removing some requirements and burdens that were unintentionally applied to the recreational vessel community..."

The proposed rule change can be found here:

If you have a few minutes to go to the federal register website and add your comments, that might help the process along.

Done!

and here's the text I submitted, copy/modify/use if you like:

Recreational boaters should not be included in NFPA 10 as it applies to commercial vessels. We, as responsible recreational boaters, maintain all of our systems including firefighting equipment and fire detection sensors to include carbon monoxide and smoke. Our families and friends depend on our safety conscious practices.

There are not that many "responsible recreational boaters" and even less that properly maintain safety equipment.

Done. My comment:
I am in support of removing recreational vessel owners from the inspection and record keeping requirements of on board fire extinguishers. It puts an undue burden on those it was not intended to apply to and is unnecessary. I am in support of public education campaigns regarding all aspects of boating safety and having operational fire suppression equipment on board should be highlighted in these messages.

Nice. I'm going to plagiarize the hell out of that.
