Filter Worries

Did you not get the FIL1036 when you were at NAPA?
I didn’t see your suggestion while there. I called them back and he said he had one of the FIL1036. I’ll get it tomorrow

Where would I find the Serial Number on the motor. My intake cover has the 4.3l Thunderbolt V Ignition Model MCM 4.3L
262 cid
All the spots where serial numbers were written are blank or not legible.

It's possible the Sea Ray dealer thought you had the remote-mount filter option, hence the reason they recommended a different size than the one that fits on your block. Unless you specifically told them it was a block-mount?

Mercury and Quicksilver are the same thing. Mercury brands it differently to be sold in other places than a Merc-certified shop. Usually about the same price, too.

You can definitely get other filters - sometimes it's easiest to just stop by a local Merc shop, though.

Regarding stripped threads... did the old filter give you a problem coming off the entire time? Or just a turn or two till it got loose? If it's the latter, I wouldn't worry.

Yes, I did specify block mount however it seems to get lost in the discussion as I have found in many of my attempts. Looking on line for filter this has been added as an an addendum that often gets overlooked. I was guilty of that in my early attempts of finding a filter.
The filter was snug coming off the entire way. It is difficult to reach as bottom of filter is lower than the floor of boat which requires you to angle arm down to reach bottom of filter. I ended up using a vice grip style wrench clamped at the face seal end to get enough grip and leverage to rotate it. I think if I could have gotten two hands around it and had better grip, it would have spun off by hand after breaking the tension of the seal.

To simplify all of the above - you need a filter for a GM 4.3. I had the same engine in my 185 and used one of these filters, mostly the AC Delco. The Quicksilver filter fits, but it is shorter than the standard GM filter.

AC Delco PF52E
NAPA FIL1036
Quicksilver 35-883702Q

I went to NAPA after work and bought the 1036. Still nervous whether that would work I went to Sea Ray Dealer close to Davidson NC. A part guy sold me Quicksilver 8M0123025 Filter. I questioned it fitting and he said it was correct.
Went to boat to install and Quicksilver filter was too large. The threaded stub was 0.78 major diameter and the inside diameter of threaded hole in that filter was 0.880.
I called Dealer and told them filter wasn’t correct and another part person who said he worked for many years for NAPA said to go there or OReilly and purchase the FIL1036. I told him I already had and it fit perfectly, threading on by hand with no resistance. BillK2632, you are the MAN!!! Thanks

Glad you got it!
I used either the NAPA FIL1036 or ACDelco PF52E for years on my 185. You can get the ACDelco at WalMart. Both are good filters, just use with ever one is convenient.

All those name brands are probably made by Purolator or Wix and labeled with the seller's name.

Great. Now make a list of all the common filters that cross reference with the one that fits. That way you’ll have multiple options for next time.
