Fiberglass smell in cabin -- how to eliminate?

A friend of mine has trouble with his 2005 Regal. The fiberglass smell in the cabin is so bad his admiral doesn't want to overnight.

How can this be resolved?

I don't have this problem with my 1997 Sundancer. It outgassed years ago.

Is this a problem on new Sea Rays?

Thanks for any help you can give. I did a search on this and didn't find anything.

All I can suggest is, leave all the windows and doors open as much as you can. It should be ok in a couple of months.

Not sure about whether it is a fiberglass smell or bilge smell you are actually referring to. But we use a RV Odor Eliminator in our cabin sold at Walmart in the RV section. Works pretty good, last all season long. Orange and white plastic can. Make sure all openings to the engine room are properly caulked and head system is sealed.

Have him buy an aluminum pontoon, and pitch a tent when the wife wants to sleep.

I paid extra for that fiberglass smell. You know...that "new boat smell." I only wish Glade made it available in a spray can.

Tell him "Regal's just stink, buy a Sea Ray.". Problem resolved... Until he gets on CSR and posts "My new Sea Ray smells like fiberglass." Then, you're sunk.

Seriously, I agree with RiverRat. Air it out as much as possible. The chemicals have to gas off completely at some point. Everything else will just be a coverup, and may make the situation even less tolerable for her.

Some one already suggested the obvious....trade the Regal.

The problem is the resin and catalyst that Regal uses. They are a smaller manufacturer and I've been told they choose to use a slow cure catalyst for their particular manufacturing process. Unfortunately, it takes a while for the odor of the curing resin to dissapate. Covering the smell up with "phew-phew water" like Glade or OdorBan only makes it worse.

Give it some time and it will eventually gas off all the curing resin smell ....just as well...'cause other than a fire there is no fix for this one.

Thanks for all the advice. I know the real solution is a Sea Ray, but for some reason he likes boats that are a bit more boxy and have more interior space. Smelly interior space.

Buy $5.00 worth of non-dyed eucalyptus branches at a craft store and place the sprigs in lockers. This leaves a pleasant scent on the boat and in the lockers. Also, spiders hate the smell and will go no where near it. We keep some sprigs in the large stroage locker under the bed on our boat which keeps clean sheets, pillow cases and any clothing smelling fresh. It is not an overpowering smell but may well go a long way toward masking the fiberglass smell.

I have an Oreck air purifier going 24/7 down in my cabin, use them at home also. It is amazing how dirty the sink gets when my wife cleans that thing out. It will clean all the cabin air and Ionize the air also. Wow, I sound like an info-mercial....I keep it up on a shelf near my electronic power panel, convient to a 110 outlet and just let it run all the time. Ah-no odors, clean air!

Cook some maple flavored bacon on the stove, it will smell like bacon for days.

I can come over and use the head a couple of times.

So far we've got maple bacon and beans, I'll bring some beer.

in addition to airing the boat out, have him put a fan or two or three in the boat circulating the air to speed things up.

Its important to lift off the cushions and open all compartments to get them to air out as well because on a hot day thats where the fumes are really building up.

When we cook this in our test kitchen at work everyone flocks to the kitchen thinking "ooohhhhhh pancakes"......
