feels like gears are not engaging

I had a problem and my boat wouldn't start. We fixed that and it starts perfectly now. The problem is that it feels like the gears are not engaging when i throttle. While we were testing the starting problem we pushed the black button on the bottom of the throttle so the gears didn't engage. Could it have not completely reset?

Did the button pop back out. If it is stuck in the in position may still be out of gear.
