Fed approves slowing water flow from Lake Lanier

That really sucks you guys need some rain now. I did see that the Governor of Georgia prayed for rain in a press conference the other day:

Ga. Governor Prays for Rain at Capitol By GREG BLUESTEIN – 3 days ago said:
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue stepped up to a podium outside the state Capitol on Tuesday and led a solemn crowd of several hundred people in a prayer for rain on his drought-stricken state.

"We've come together here simply for one reason and one reason only: To very reverently and respectfully pray up a storm," Perdue said after a choir provided a hymn.

Georgia and its neighboring states are caught in a drought that threatens public water supplies. Perdue has ordered water restrictions, launched a legal battle against the release of water from federal reservoirs and appealed to President Bush.

"It's time to appeal to him who can and will make a difference," Perdue told the crowd.

A church choir belted out "What a Mighty God We Serve" and "Amazing Grace" as a keyboardist swayed to the rhythm. While preachers spoke, worshippers chanted "amen," and some stood with eyes closed and arms outstretched.

"God, we need you," Perdue said. "We need rain."

Rabbis are in it too

Is there any kind of "plan b" if the lake dries up completely? Can wells be drilled or sea water conversion plants constructed? I realize that would take years, but what will be done if the taps in homes run dry and how long would it take to do something to get water running again?

The plan approved seems to be a good start but will not impact Lanier much for a while. We had a good .75" to an 1" of rain yesterday and that, according to the news equates to 4.5M gallons of water entering the lake. Sounds good until you see that the Corps Of Engineers lets out 2.5B gallons per day. Lots of zeros but B is a Billion, think of Austin Powers.

We need a lot more just to get the ground wet to facilitate runoff into creeks, streams and the lake system.
