Faulty Fuel Gauge

I am a new owner of a used 2001 210 bowrider. The gas tank is (apparently) filled to the brim but the fuel gauge reads about 1/3 of a tank. If I run it an hour or so it is down near empty. Is there any way the tank can be apparently full but really be near empty? Or is the sending unit, or tank float or console gauge faulty? How do I go about trouble-shooting this problem? What is the approximate fuel consumption per hour on this boat (at cruising speed / and at slow running)? Thanks very much for your advice.

Welcome aboard. May want to put your boat info in the signature your section, you'll get more replies.
Not sure about your specific model GPH rate, what size engine, how are fast/slow are you running, etc. Boat gas gauges are notoriously wrong, only use them as a back up. I always figure on average burning about 9 GPH on my boat.

replace sender unit (to test gauge - short wires on sending unit and fuel gauge should read full)
float on sending unit is old and possibly floats below surface
if you remove sending unit remember that goes back same way or you will have hard time to reinstall mounting screws
