faulty depth finder

I need to get some advice on the steps of checking my depth finder. Its giving deeper depths then what it really is. I dont know the make of it other then it was on the boat so i Guess OEM it is going through the hull. Should i just buy all new parts?

It really would be a big help to know what kind of depth gauge you have.

Is the deeper depth reading always the same amount? For example always reads 5 feet deeper. If so it may be the offset setting has gotten messed up. Many depth systems have an offset setting to allow to compensate for the height of the transducer. I have to deal with tides and shallow water a lot so I have mine adjusted to read the depth from the skeg of the outdrive. Some folks prefer to adjust the offset to show depth based on waterline. That allows agreement with charts.
