Well Fall is upon us and I am planing on a few projects. What projects do you guys have planned?

Here are mine, and any advice would be welcomed with open arms.

1. Remove, clean, and service my aftercoolers. Had a leaky turbo so they are likely to be fouled up, possibly contributing to my transom turning black with soot. (Picture of the replacement gaskets)

2. Remove and replace fuel senders on both tanks, and while I am in their I will shock my tank with BIOCIDE as I have an algae problem going on. Once that is done I will be cleaning my tanks. Built myself a fuel filtering circulation system that I will use to save myself the $800 they want to clean my tanks. Picture of suite case full of parts to bring to Mexico. Biocide, de-greasers, filters, fuel senders, accumulation tank and much more)

3. Oil changes. The only SAE 40 I can find is Mobil Delvac 1340. Anyone see a problem in using this stuff in my Cat 3116's?

4. Replace bowl seals on my toilets. The video boogaboo posted will definitely help.

5. Re install my air conditioner water pump. I blew a hose and it sprayed salt water right into the motor on the pump and burnt it out. $65 to get it fixed. Not bad.

I could go on and on but that's a good start.

None of those jobs sound as much fun as your last thread. Not sure about the oil, I would check with Cat

Hey Arl798,
I know your the Cat expert in Mexico -but for this type of service.... Frank W is the most knowledgeable person I know .....hopefully he will chime in ......

I am hoping he will chime in as well. And ya doesn't seem like anyone wants to chat with me unless its about strippers hahahahaha Shame that threat got deleted...It was just getting good.

Most people seem to have the best results with Cat Special Application Engine Oil (SAEO) which is a single viscosity oil with no viscosity enhancers. This oil will produce little or no soot at all. I have been running the 3116 on that oil will no soot build up at all. The CAT guidelines for fluids are here http://parts.cat.com/cda/files/3244668/7/SEBU6251-16.pdf and there is a special section on page 16 for 3116 and 3126 Marine engines, which calls out single weight oil with a API CF rating which according to your picture of your oil container you have.

Funny thing, I talked to my Cat dealer (which services two marine diesels a year) about oil and they had never even heard of the CAT SAEO and told me to use Rotella 15W-40. That is until I whipped out the publication above and they all looked dumbfounded.

There are instructions right on the forum title, bottom of main forums, YES, I'm sure you will see it. :)

Mine are much more simple. Clean & wax, get bellows changed, add guides to the trailer and wait for spring. If I get the funds I'm going to add a second battery and an isolator.

I have very little to contribute here except to say that Cat's official recommendation is for SAEO, a synthetic packaged for Caterpillar with no viscosity enhancers. The problem is that SAEO is very hard to find. Cat stores could order it, but I was told I needed to order a pallet load as a minimum order. So, I researched RotellaT SAE single viscosity oils and found it to have specs that are virtually identical to SAEO. Therefore, I've been using Rotella T SAE 40 since 1997 and my annual oil samples show no wear and no contaminates, indicating oil breakdown.

Delcav 1300 is considered one of the leading heavy duty oils, (along with Delo 400 and RotellaT) as long as it meets the required rating for your engines. A caution with the Mobil Delvac #1340 shown in the above photo......it has been discontinued so you will be changing to a different oil next time around if you do change to it now. The Mobil website shows a replacement SAE 40, but I didn't take the time to look at the specs.

My recommendation is to go to cat.com and find the specs for SAEO, then go to Mobil's website and compare the specs with SAEO to see how much difference there is. I talked with the Cat fluid labs a while back and they were pretty passive about the whole lube oil thing. Pretty much anything with the right rating....it was CF-4 at the time......was ok with them. The only caution was don't use multiviscosity oils in 3116/3126 engine because of potential aftercooler fouling.

Thanks for the advice. In Mexico the Cat dealer tells me to run 15-40 which I know is wrong. They can get me the Cat sae40 but takes 6 weeks. My supplier on the island has about 30 pales of the Delvac stuff maybe I will buy 6 of them and be good for a long time.

Got a problem with my trim pump and plan to change out. No problem with my bellows, but at this age it's time to change it. Just the usual winter stuff, fuel stabil, oil change, new impellor, tune 'er up, etc. Already did a new bimini and stereo stuff.

Well, we've got plans to set up a new stereo system for the cockpit, move the speakers down low so they aren't in passengers ears. Add a set out on the swim platform. Try to figure out how to get to the stern shower connections, to repair a leak. We may have to pull the boat to check on a squeaky shaft. Not sure why it squeaks when freewheeling in neutral (new development). If we do lift it, we're gonna move to 4 blade props. Rebuild the back end of the generator (if the dang parts ever come in). Maybe finish the LED light transformation down in the cabin. And, probably won't get the time, but I'd love to have an anchor wash down in the anchor locker. I have NO CLUE how to install one though.

All new electronics. New entertainment systems.

That is precisely what I did. There was a rumor that Shell was reformulating single vis. oils a couple of years ago (they just changed the packaging), so I caught our local distributor with 2/3 of a pallet of the old RotellaT SAE 40 and bought it all at his cost to help clear his inventory.

I plan on running the boat all year but still want to replace my stereo, remove the carpet in the cabin and install hardwood flooring, have my cockpit vinyl redone if the budget allows and rehab the swim platform to clean up old patches and patch where needed as well (matched pattern #103 ordered). We will be out on the boat from 10/4 to 10/13 then Halloween weekend, Thanksgiving weekend, Lighted Boat Parades and New Year's weekend so getting everything done will be tough. May have to cruise with a bare floor and throw rugs a couple of times!

order a new Camper enclosure, replace the window on the original slant back, get to the bottom of my stereo amp and sub problem, pull my RL70CRC Plus and ship it back to Raymarine for diagnostics,,, clean, wax and wait!!!!
