Faded Paint top of outdrive area

Is this typical? :huh: I recently ran the engine with the muffs in the driveway and this area was warmer than the rest of the drive but not hot. The engine was running for maybe 5 minutes just to get up to temp...

BTW, this is how it looked when I bought it with 100 hrs this spring; only put 11 hours so far since I've had the boat.

There is a lot of heat generated around the top bearing. It looks like that may be dulling the paint. Look into a drive cooler if you are worried about heat in your outdrive and maybe have the upper bearing inspected.

I used a clear "anti-foulant" on the lower unit if my yamaha outboard and it looked alot like that after it came out of the water. It may be something the previous owned tried on the drive and removed it from the easier surfaces.

I have the same faded apperance on my outdrive. However I can actually scrape it off if i concentrate on a spot. I have tried many cleaning solutions to try to get this clean but it will not come off. Anyone have any advise on how to get this off and the outdrive looking clean again?

That is calcium buildup from heat, it will clean off with an acid safe for aluminum. I found some at local boat supply place. A drive shower will prevent the calcium build up.

+1 I had this exact thing on mine and thought it was paint fading. Acid will take it off I use a blue kitchen sponge and zep(c.l.r.) from home depot.

What is your aluminum safe stuff ?? I will look into getting some!
