Those old wooden boats have a electrical and fuel system that are not ignition protected. They'd be unacceptable today. It's a terrible accident. But it should serve as a warning to people who have old boats to upgrade their boat's systems.
Even if your gas boat is newer and has ignition protected systems, it's still a good idea to get down in the bilge and check for gas vapors.

So, what, gas vapors built up inside the bow cabin (which exploded) from other nearby boats being fueled? Even running your blowers wouldn't prevent that. How do you prevent such a thing? Scary.

You should always close your cabin hatches and doors and remove your passengers from the boat while you're fueling. I would never had thought to do so while someone else is fueling.
