Are the waxes/polishes I see selling at the marine store REALLY that much different from automobile products? They are SO much more expnsive. I want to wax/polish my gelcoat. What should I buy?
Supposedly Marine products have better UV protection. But no one has proven that to me yet. Outside of products specifically developed for gel coat, I often wondered the same thing myself.
Starbrite marine wax with TFT or teflon IMO can not be beat!!!!!!! it goes on easily and buffs out to an amazing shine very easily. I love the stuff but you're right, add MARINE to the product name and up goes the price. They know we have the cash and they really understand their market
Starbrite is a marine only product and as far as I know there is no automotive equivalent is there?.
In particular, if you start looking at Meguiar's line of products, I think things get very blurry between the auto stuff and the marine stuff. Personally, I think the formulas are the same on some of their products but we will probably never know for sure. Just the same, if you find a Marine product in their line up that you like, an extra $15-$20 bucks a year to purchase it is really not too bad compared to buying the automotive equivalent at Wally's World.
The products I have used and like on my boat are Meguiar's Flagship which is essentially a polymer that also has a mild cleaner in it. It goes on easily with an orbital buffer and the cleaner does an excellent job of removing water spots and bringing out the shine. I also have used and will continue to use another polymer product I bought from properboatcare.com with the Gel Coat Labs label.
This is very similar to Maguiar's Flagship wax in terms of the results you get. I have posted many pictures before and it get's kind of redundant but here is my 240SD done with the Gel Coat labs product........
and my 260DA which I just did with Meguiar's Flagship.
