Our CATs were serviced last year $900 for both, 1,000 hour service. Valve adjustment and a few injectors tweaked.

Bill collector, are those 3162s, what year? I’m assuming those are pretty different from the 480?

There really isn't anything special about the cummins 1000 hour service that is listed in the book. Its oil/filter change and valve adjustment. The valve adjustment is 1-2 hours per engine and a gasket.

Guessing what they really mean is to clean aftercoolers, gear/oil cooler and heat exchangers as well ad the valve adjustment. The aftercooler should be done every 2-3 years in salt water.

Aftercooler service runs around $2000 each, it takes me about 8-10 hours labor, but is only about $100 in gaskets.

Heat exchanger is a little less, maybe 6 hours and the same $100 in gaskets. But this is also a great time to replace thermostat and coolant so add parts for those ($500?).

gear/fuel cooler is less than an hour and no extra parts

So all in, including the valve adjustment its 15-20 hours labor per engine and around $500-$1000 in parts, so $3,000 to $5,000 depending on labor rates (per engine)?

I would get a detailed list of what they consider as the 1000 hour service

I believe the 3126 1000 hr service does NOT call for valve adjustment. If I remember correctly it calls for them at 250 hrs and 2000 hrs?

Sounds really high. What does the estimate include?

Complete cooling system service on a QSC 8.3 performed by Cummins techs was $4,000 for me. Adjusting the valves was about $750. Have the aftercoolers been serviced before?
