How exactly are these supposed to work? And what is the life expectancy? We tore our motor apart, and found no cracks what so ever. The mechanic said our Flappers were fine. For approx $50.00 each, I think now is the time to replace them.

See other thread on this subject.

If they are like the ones on my 5.7s they are spring loaded rubber covered flaps the fit into the exhaust tubes and form a loose seal that will be closed tighter if a surge of water comes back up the tube. Exhaust pressure forces them open and allows exhaust/water to flow out. I agree, now is the time to replace them while its apart. Don't know how long they will last, depends on alot of factors like hours of use per year, how hot she runs, if i gets overheated etc. I'd guess under normal useage, say about four or five years MTBF?

Are they supposed to seal completly from back wash, or just try to hold back the water? How efficient are they? Just trying to find the problem.

The way mine looked, I don't think they would block 100% of the water but I could be wrong. Mine didn't even have ANY shutters installed on either engine until this spring. I thought I may have had one stuck in the y-pipe but upon inspection I found that someone prior to me had completly removed them all. I replaced them for piece of mind.
