Original exhaust parts were changed with OEM in the fall of 2003. I have not had a single issue but decided I was on borrowed time. I removed the manifolds, risers and elbows. They all looked to be in good shape with the exception of the outside port manifold. One port had moisture in it and the other was a different color than the rest. Here is a link to the pics http://s856.photobucket.com/albums/ab130/rcalasant/Exhaust Manifold Port Outside/

What does this mean? Is this an indication of another problem? Or will replacement solve it?

Thank you in advance for your input and advice

Just ordered ss hi-tek exhausts today... Should be installing them in about a month. I don't know when my manifolds where last changed, but yours like like mine.

The weak point is the gaskets between the manifold and risers and/or elbows. It is a crap design and you need to replace the gaskets at least every other year to or they are prone to leak.

So you replace gaskets every other year? How often do you replace the Iron?

The whitish deposits look suspect to me- like saltwater seeping from the riser that's being burned off.
I'd be more interested in seeing the condition of the top of the manifold (gasket surface) and the riser.

I'm assuming that the manifolds are part of the jacket water system and only your risers are RWC.

Its a good idea to remove the risers about evry 2 years or so just to check them.
Cheap insurance. Just the cost of the gaskets and some time.

Russ, most catastrophic failures of these engines are traced back to the elbow gaskets. I am a believer and will now do them ev other year. Close call this year with one failing gasket - caught it in the NICK of time. This engine showed evidence of coolant in the oil and was overdue for gaskets (4 full seasons). Lookee what we found in the exhaust passages when we pulled the exhaust elbow off. DO NOT mess around with this maintenance item. 2-3 hours of labor and a few bucks for the parts could save your engine.

This is when you replace the iron. I believe these were original manifolds but I can't be sure since I've only owned the boat since 2004. The picture below is one of the batter mating surfaces. The photo at the bottom of this post is the worst one. Note how "un-smooth" the mating surfaces are. Even a new gasket is not likely to prevent intrusion.

It has been my experience that any iron parts that are raw water cooled in a costal environment are good for about 5 to 7 seasons. Ron's experience above shows that even when FWC'ed the iron wont last forever. Either way replacing these parts is cheaper that replacing a motor.
