I'm sorting out a few more bugs. On a closed cooling system.

Both exhaust manifolds and risers are cool to the touch but the exhaust hoses are hot, and one hose is hotter than the other. As in, I can’t put my hand on the hose for more than a half second.

How hot should the exhaust hoses get? Should they be cold/cool to the touch or should they be hot? If I remember correctly I thought they were suppose to be cool to the touch but it's been a few years since I have messed with these things.

it should be cool. if its to hot or not enough water going through them it will melt the hose or muffler.

your manifolds have AF the risers have raw water going through them. are both hoses hot? or just one side? it could be a bad riser? if you have an IR gun follow the path of the raw water.
also when was the last time the impeller was changed? and coolers and heat exchanger serviced?

good luck

You definitely have a water flow problem. My closed cooled 454's are cool to the touch through the whole exhaust system. Not sure which style risers you have, but I have seen the exhaust hoses put on at an angle and it restricts water flow. You also might pull your hoses off and look at the water jacket ports to make sure they're open - they can rust closed - if that's what you find, best to replace them. A riser leak will destroy these mercs.

That's what I was thinking. The boat is new to me so I have no history of maintenance other than I just changed out the impeller. Guess I will start pulling stuff apart.
