Next spring I will need to replace the exhaust shutters in my 1989 5.7 merc. So has anyone installed the newer style part with no bushings. I have read that they have fit problems with the new style.

I put a set of the new style flappers in my 89 Stingray with a 350 mag this summer. They don't seem to fit at first because they don't move as freely as the old style one. You have to make sure the pins are snapped into the holes in the y pipe or they can pop out when the exhaust hoses are reinstalled. If I remember correctly I had to tap them with a mallet to seat them properly. I haven't had any issues with them, they have been doing their job all summer.

Are they the plastic ones? If so you have to shave down the side pins and keep trying them out until the are free flapping, i changed mine over the summer

the new style ones don't have the bushing like the original ones but an oblong ring that fits into the pipe

You are correct the oblong ring fits into the top of the y pipe and they also have nubs sticking out on the sides that fit in the holes where the bushings were. You have to make sure those nubs are seated or the assembly can pop back out.
