exhaust coolant problems

Also, when you get your manifolds make sure you chase out the threads with a tap of the appropriate size. There's a thread from earlier this year where manifolds were cracking when bolting them down due to paint/etc on the threads. When bolting them in, the extra crud in there provided enough leverage to crack them.

The manifolds and risers are sierra and the other parts are mercruiser. I got them from go2 marine. They were great making sure the parts were correct and ordering was a piece off cake. They were semi local (Seattle) so they got here with in a week even though it was the 4th of july week.

Ok so here is the break down. So after I had everything off I inspected the Y tube and exhaust bellows with a bore scope (thanks neighbor) for any damage or parts of my melted water shutter assembly. I got it all out when I changed the impeller and zincs. I bought all the parts from Go2marine out of Seattle great service and getting the parts was real quick. I used mercruiser for everything except the manifold, spacer, and riser those were sierra.

I used a pretty nifty trick to hold the manifoldwhile I started the bolts. I laid a 2X6 across my transom and pilot's seat andthen used a simple tie-down strap to hoist it out of the box and gently lowerit in front of the exhaust ports. After that was bolted in I remembered themanifold plugs. If anyone follows in my footsteps learn from my mistake and putthose in first. It wasn't too bad putting them in but it would have been alloteasier to do it on my workbench then lying on my deck.

Next put Loctite 510 on the lower gasket and placed the spacer, then same for upper gasket and then the riser. This was a pain in the butt. I couldn't think of a good way to keep everything in line while I stuffed the riser into the upper exhaust boot and exhaust pipe, the best I could come up with was to keep all the hose clamps loose and push the boot/pipe out of the way, set the riser with 2 bolts on opposing corners and then pull the boot/pipe onto the riser. It was pretty difficult but I didn't want to get any of that gasket sealant into the water ways of the manifold, spacer, or riser.

After that I snugged down the bolts to 25ft lbs. tightened down the hose clamps, connected the hoses tripled check everything and then waited 24 hours for the gasket sealant to cure.

I just got done firing it up for a smoke check and everything was perfect. Temps were great the exhaust is cool all the way out.

This is the biggest job I have done on my boat and I am very happy with the results. I learned allot about my boat and gained tons of confidence to work on more. I would recommend talking lots to guys here on the forum, at your marine store, and to the parts dealer you use. Also buy a manual I used the Seloc manual and the directions and diagrams were great.

And I would like to thank; Todd (tdschafer), Bob & Sue, Cliff (CliffA), Jim (moparlvr4406), Rod (rcknecht), SloBurn, David (dpmulvey), and SRC for responding to my post, giving words of encouragement, and advice. It is greatly appreciated.

thanks for the follow-up post and glad you got it all worked out....my engine does not overheat but my starboard exhaust elbow runs much wamer than the port elbow so i suspect i may have a partial blockage somewhere in the cooling system.....this thread will be a good source of info for me as i troubleshoot the problem.......

it is always good to put closure to all post so that someone else can benefit from your experiences in the future when they search archived threads....

Yes you're right, I just wish I would have had the thought to take pictures of each major step. This site is invaluable for guys with really nice boats (SeaRays) but on a budget to where they have to do allot of the maintenance themselves.

Ok so today was shakedown II. It went perfectly. The risers and manifolds stayed at a nice warm temp. Eng temp was a perfect 180 degrees. Good day on the water. Just wish the wind would have been a lot less.

I feel like I missed a big part of this thread. Was there an over heating issue caused by blockage in the exhaust from a broken water shutter?
