I keep running into the same problem and my mechanic cannot figure it out... boat won't go over 4200 RPM although everything has been checked and bottom has been cleaned from marine growth. I just need a really good mechanic who knows the boat in and out... any recommendations? Oh and a good electrician to fix the radio that keeps going out

Just follow the first unicorn you can find. They always return back to their owners, who are inexpensive good marine mechanics.

very funny ... but just so u know Miami is the only place where there is a chance to find that unicorn u r talking about

I grew up in Miami so your risk is more in finding a competent mechanic vs a "Jose".
Your rpm issue may not be related to engine performance but prop size too large or improper cupping.

Explore prop suitability. Seems your rpms are close to 4400-4800 range.

Are you saying you used to get over 4200 rpms and now you can't? Is your tech connecting a computer to the engines? Any fault codes? Have you changed props? Have you loaded several hundred pounds of gear? When you get to 4200 rpms are you able to trim up and get more rpms or is 4200 rpms after trimming the boat? Sorry for all the questions, but the more info the better.

No the questions are good. Yes i used to get at least 4800 to 5000.
Not getting any fault codes or alarms....
Props the same since .
I have not loaded anything on the boat other than 3 people max
4200 rpm after getting the boat to plane

I haven't changed the props yet so why did i start getting low RPM out of a sudden

Unscientific off the top of my pointed head.....

Let's talk fuel.....

Fuel pressure OK? Fuel filters OK? Old fuel? E10 or greater fuel? Injectors clean?

Let's talk weight.

How is she sitting in the water compared to before the problem? Have you checked for leaks? Blisters? Has the hull been sounded or scanned for moisture?

just some random thoughts..... When was the last full tuneup?

David,

Fuel pressure is ok and i just changed the fuel filters and oil filters about a month ago. She is sitting the same and been using the same fuel since March.

When was the bottom cleaned and by whom? Are you sure you got what you paid for? After 1 month in the water with a fresh bottom going in, my boat would not plane or get above 3100 rpm......check the running gear for hard growth as well as the entire bottom.

Just for clarification purposes. Are your "twin 460 somethings" engines 496 8.1s Horizons, or 496HO inboards, or are the 496MAG with I/O's? this will make a difference where your RPM range should be.

Actually you hit it right on the head because the marina has the worst marine growth but i have the boat on schedule to be cleaned every two weeks. It costs me 150$ just to keep the bottom cleaned. I asked the guy to clean it the day before i went out last time and i saw a noticeable change in power but not back to normal

Any of these computer controlled engines can/will cover up for a dead cylinder, regardless of cause and the symptom will be exactly as you describe.

With everything else apparently normal check the plugs, wires, cap/rotor in that order. ( the cap/rotor is usually a hard or no start)

Easier said than done, but a full power single engine run will tell you which engine is the problem.

And the Magic 8-Ball says....."You have a bad Tachometer", happened to me, too. :)

I have used USA Power Boats in Cutler Bay. They are a little pricey but came highly recommended.
