Well, after a year of owning a boat I just had the experience of getting rid of an unwelcome visitor who made a mess inside and out my boat..... a large mouse.

I hate them and I have to confess in public, I suffer from mouse-phobia.

How do you prevent them from coming and visit you? Any ideas? Maybe ultrasound devices?

Help please. I normally post pictures from my posts but not this time..... :smt089

I hate the critters too our old marina had 2 good mousing cats that kept them away. There are only several good ways to get rid of them 1) Cat, 2) Trap, 3) Poison.
Drier sheets will work for spiders.

If you use poison check your boat in every place you can under mattress pads, bedding, rolls of toilet paper, food stored and most important look for any signs they may have gotten in wiring bundles they chew the insulation off. They'll use anything they can to make nests with. Take anything like cereal boxes off the boat or store your supplies in metal containers.
If you have a dead one onboard the smell is horrible & hard to get the odor out.

Here's a good article

Do a search for "how to get rid of mouse on a boat"

Good Luck

Yeah, get on this, a mouse will cause all kinds of mess and damage. An old fashion trap works best, you get the guy and take care of him, he doesn't crawl somewhere out of the way and die. I had a moment of compassion a few years ago - saw a little mouse in my tool shed, it was cold and I let him be. Came back two weeks later and he had made a mess of everything, chewed up my boots, crapped on everything, got into grass seed. I put trap and got him. You cannot mess around with these little guys. You gotta man up and get him (or get your wife to - haha).

Prevention is the key. If you keep your boat moored then you need some sort of rat guard on every line that connects to shore.
I've been told that a length of PVC pipe over the lines prevents them from getting a grip and climbing aboard. Just make sure to seal the ends so they can't travel inside the tube.

I've seen guys use a large funnel. Point tapered end towards boat and run your line through it

Trap the little sucker. Dryer sheets seem to work, as do other things, to keep them away. But this guy is already aboard. If you poison him and he crawls in to some hard to find or reach area to die you will have the stench of his rotting corpse.
If you trap him you can get rid of him.

Thanks to all!!! great ideas; this time I used a conventional trap and it worked (I put it under the helm on the floor as I saw clear samples of pee and poop). the cleaner helped me to leave everything in order but I'm taking more disinfectant tomorrow.

Horrible....horrible.

Dont put the trap in the middle of an open space.
Put it against a wall. Mice tend to hug the walls.

Good luck.

This is an excellent suggestion!

Glad you caught that one, but don't assume there's only one. Set out another trap with peanut butter on it along the edge of the deck close to the bulkhead.

Man that sucks. I can kinda relate as last year I had one get in my stored summer car in my garage. Car was covered and for some reason the hatch glass popped open. I checked it out and noticed the pee spots on the paint and then the poop inside the car! Was grossed out! Went and bought almost every kind of trap that night. The next day the glue trap got him. Glue traps kinda suck as they will be alive but hey...he HAD to go! Luckily he didn't chew on anything.

^^^^ This! ^^^^

Yep!! you guys were right!!; there was more than one!! yesterday we got rid of the corpse of the first one, left everything clean and this morning again signs of mice. Back to the supermarket and this time we put two traps inside and one outside and this time the menu on offer was smelly cheese.... hopefully they like it!!!.

Mice cannot resist peanut butter. Plus, they can pull cheese (or other solid foods) off the trap quickly enough to not get caught or even trip the trap. With peanut butter they can't carry it away and must lick it off the trap with predictable results.

I found one on the finger of my dock, GF handed me the gaffe, and I used it like a baseball bat and sent him flying. Tiger Muskie came up and took him in one gulp.
