Oldest maker of outboards ceasing production.......Amazing given how well the entire outboard industry is doing - sticking with 2-stroke, reliability issues and a weak dealer network took its toll....

Sad to hear. As a kid Evinrude and Johnson were basically the same - my grandfather was a Johnson guy. The outboard battle was Evinrude, Johnson and Mercury. The Yamaha, Honda's etc had not even been heard of. Obviously the technology moved on to 4 stroke motors, but you just can't forget the sound and smell of an old 2 stroke outboard motor. I think the last generation of Evinrude's were just ugly motors. With Evinrude gone are there any 2 stroke outboards left?

Mercury Optimax.

Weren’t the new 2-strokes that Evinrude unveiled in the past two-three years cleaner and better performing than any of the competition?

Yes.

But as an old Sage once said: "You can make the best most nutritious dog food in the world, but if the dog won't eat it!".

I haven’t been in the market for an Outboard powered boat in ages, but when I saw those motors I knew it I were in the market, that is what would have been on the transom of my boat. And I have owned nothing but Mercury since I was 14.

I have run nothing but Evinrudes since 1968. Up until 2017. My Whaler, and my Searay, both came with Mercury 4-strokes. Obviously, both under the Brunswick umbrella, they were the only horse to ride.

Just starting the 4th season now and I couldn't be more pleased. Friends with late model Evinrudes report mixed results.

The other part of the story is 12 Merc dealers in town and only 1 'Rude.

Out back my barn contains 29 Evinrudes and 10 Johnsons, a vintage Lyman and a classic Pontiac. Just another brand that is sure to appreciate in value.

Sad to see them all go...

Nothing to add except you have good taste in vehicles.

Well there’s still Yamaha and Honda

I love the smell of two stroke in the morning. It smells like......................Fishing.
