I try with google translator :)--i coome from denmark:smt100 i am not so good at English -
I live in Denmark (europe) has for some years ago bought a 98 370 in miami and got it shipped home. have been very pleased with it and made really great about it. Among other things proppeler mounted both front and back, helps a lot when I put it to port- the ports here are much smaller than here with you. I have taken genneratoren out and put an inverter into it so I can pull 220 volts out of batteries - has 13 pices of 100 amp batteries in it to also have enough power to the proppeler. has changed from 7.4 to 6.2 gasoline to reduce gasoline consumption as petrol over here is very expensive around $ 2 per litter

And now comes my question . I am building it into diesel to further reduce the cost of the voyage. im going to put Yanmar 4 LPE-ste with 275 hp in it, do you think they are big enough

hope you can help me

advance thousand thanks from a very happy 370 owner

I am no expert, but my 41' runs well with 350 HP deisel engines. So it seems like 275 HP should be good for your boat. Best to gt in touch with a surveyor or some other expert to get thier opinion before you start the project.

Since the 6 cylinder Yanmar fits in the space a 454 uses, I'd have to look at the 6LPA in about a 350 hp rating.......300 continuous. The reasons are that the 4 cyl Yanmar tends to shake and is noisey and the horsepower is low for this application. Sea Ray sold the 370DA with Caterpillar and Cummins options and both were 300 hp rated engines and both made the 370 a very good boat. They were economical, quiet and fast.

Koch215: I believe Diesel 275 hp at a lower rpm may be enough hp to replace the Gas hp made at a higher rpm. The 6cyl may be a smarter option!
What hp and rpm were the 7.4 Gas? What rpm will the Diesel make 275 hp at?

Frank: are you referring to Cummins 300hp @ 3000 and Cat @ 2800? That would be like a 480hp - 514hp gas @ 4800 (with out any torque rise). Those Yanmar's seem to turn even more than a Cummins! The 350 option is most likely comparable to our slower turning Diesels. Not sure if Yanmar has the torque rise Cat/Cummins puts into there's.

Not to be off subject, but a good subject indeed!

lets not forget that the props should be changed if you do a diesel. You can put a 1000 hp. engine it it but if you turn the same old props slower than you did before then you will not b happy
