Engine trouble!

I have a switch next to the engine that cuts all power-ie battery, but as far as i'm aware i have no kill switch-where should it be?

It would definitely be on the throttle "plate" - the larger, square-ish part that's actually attached to the fiberglass. Bottom, left corner.

I thought that the kill switch was used in the early 90's. But maybe it wasn't until a bit later. If that had gotten bumped "off" it would completely describe the problem you're having.

ok,here is a photo of the dashboard & throttle lever.I'm pretty sure i don't have a safety switch anywhere but please correct me if i'm wrong. When i took these photos today i tried to start her & guess what she started!!!????? i quickly put her into reverse & back to neutral as fast as i could as i still had her tied to pontoon-she didn't stall,i switched her off & she started again fine, selected forward this time & she stalled,& now she won't start again!!!............ i have wiggled the nuetral switch, still not start, back to how it was,it will crank over but not start & run, from previous posts if the nuetral switch is at fault the engine would'nt even turn over right......I am so hacked off with it,the weather has been stinking hot this weekend here in England & i can't use my boat, now back to work for another 5 long days! i'm going to buy a new nuetral switch anyway & try it as current one looks like its seen better days

I still think its a bad shift cut out switch. Measure the resistance between the two screws in your third photo.
There should be an open circuit when everything is working properly. The switch will close durring shifting momentarily.
Or when things are not working try disconnecting one of the wires, this will disconnect the shift cutout switch and disable it

If the neutral switch was at fault you would not be able to crank the engine over at all.

The engine cranks,so the neutral switch must not be the fault.its gotta be something silly,i'm going to get the guy who serviced the leg to have a look-i'm really hopeing it will be down to poor adjustments of the cables when he replaced all the bellows/gear cable.

You are correct, you don't have a kill switch. I could've sworn that they all had them by '94. Oh well. Thanks for taking the time to take a pic, though.

How are are your battery connections and grounds?

Battery connections & grounds are ok-i'm going to try & bridge the cut off switch & see if anything changes

The shift cut out switch is open durring normal operation. You want to try disconnecting it.

can someone tell me how i adjust the gear cable, how do i know where neutral is?.....The guy who originally serviced the leg & replaced all bellows has stitched me up!! so i want to have a go my self

well,i've made sure the gear cables are correctly adjusted & everything checks out fine.Engine still starts on the button 1st time every time but after a few minutes i have to give it some throttle to keep her at a decent idle.Switched engine off & tried to start again-still no go,engine stinks of fuel, checked carb-full of fuel,i think its the carb that is causing all my problems, floats probably stuck & over fueling.its a 4 barrell rochester carb, have ordered a gasket kit so going to try & overhaul, are they complicated?
