My buddies 2004 4.3 MPI engine cut out and fails to start. The engine cranks but will not start. We changed the IAC thinking that might be the problem. But the issue remains. He had a mechanic look at it and he feels its the computer. So we removed the computer off the stb engine and put on the port and it still does not start. The fuel pump primes and the engine cranks, but that's as far as it goes.
So who can tell me what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1st off 2 things to check- fuel pressure and spark. Keep in mind no spark may inhibit the fuel pump so check the fuel pressure as it primes...

Check for power at the ignition coil with the key on.

Also disable the shift interrupt switch and see if that helps.

Update:

Turns out he had a bad computer. The mechanic changed it today and the motor ran good. But now he has another issue. The fuel gauge is not reading correctly. Its shows a 1/4 tank and it has 3/4 of a tank of fuel. Why would changing the computer affect the fuel reading? The mechanic said he has to link the computer to the smart gauges. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks,

If they are Smartcraft gauges then he will most likely need to run through the re-calibration routing. See the post below:

Kevin,
This is Mikes boat. He says he has about 3/4 of a tank. But I think he really doesn't know. I read the Smart Craft Manual before I seen your post. Ill give him a call and talk to him about resetting the gauges.
Thanks

kevin or anyone,
I have one for you! have twin cummins 430 hp, recently have to tap the starter with a hammer to get it to start, otherwise it acts like the battery is dead. I've been told some folks with older cars have same problem, any thoughts as to why this is? thanks bob

The starter motor doesn’t like excessive heat (like near an exhaust manifold), long durations of cranking ( 2 5 second cranks is better than 1 10 second crank) and lack of use.
