Hey all!

I just acquired a 79 weekender 300 and have been tinkering with it so we can get it out on the water. Still a couple issues to sort out but figure I'll post and see what kind of solutions are out there.

For her age she is in great shape except for the odd quirk which we are trying to iron out.

First issue is the port engine is overheating at idle. What we have done so far is replace the impeller on the raw water pump as the last one was shredded. We checked all flow from the through hull and even back flushed the system.

We have a jabsco on this engine. We also swapped it with the starboard side pump which is now Sherwood. Both work on stbd but engine also idles too fast but that'll be another thread.

We we got it to the point of the pump working at a higher rpm. So at idle we sit around 700rpm and no water flow. Increasing the rpm to 1200 we get water flow. Enough to maintain temperature but not enough to cool down. We can maintain the temp at around 180 which is a bit higher than ideal operating temp. But once we drop the rpm it starts climbing quickly.

Could it be an advanced idle that keeps it revving low and not pulling water? The pump flow at 1200 rpm seems a bit weak but is flowing like a garden hose. But at 700 nothing. What's the proper flow rate?

Thanks for the look

Sounds like you may have parts of the impeller still blocking water flow. Did you check you heat exchanger, oil cooler and power stirring coolers. If you have a trany theses trany coolers too. Hanger the tube to clean them out...

Need some more basic info. Are engines fresh or raw water cooled? Have they spent their life running in fresh or salt? Engine hours? What you describe can be caused by many things depending on those variables.

+1 on the impeller blades. If the old one was shredded were you able to locate all the veins?

Thanks for the responses!

Engines are raw and fresh water cooled. We did locate all the old impeller bits. Back flushed raw water system. We did a suction test but didn't actually measure the rate so that will be the next step before I start taking off all the heat exchangers.

Engine has about 2300 hours. It's in fresh water right now and I thinks has spent most of its life moored in fresh. But not certain. At least the last 5 -10 have been in fresh.
