Hi fellow dancers, what type of oil is recommended in my 1996 7.4LT carb 270 dancer and capacity. Fresh Water, Georgian Bay Ont. Canada Thanks Steve

Steve, I used the Mercury Mercruiser oil as recommended by Mercury. This past season I switched up to Amsoil 10w-40 Marine oil.

I would bet your manual says to use Quicksilver 25W-40, non synthetic... but you will get a plethora of opinions here on the best oil to use.

This is straight from Mercruiser service manual 31, September 2000 version:

"IMPORTANT: The use of non-detergent oils, multi-viscosity oils (other than
Quicksilver 25W-40 or a good quality 20W-40 or 20W-50), synthetic oils, low quality
oils or oils that contain solid additives are specifically not recommended."

Yep, or Chevron Delo or Mobil Delvac, all of them 15w40, and $13 / gallon.

I just switched to the amsoil full synthetic since mercury is no longer making it.

With respect, look at your engine requirements vs, the recommendations....mine included. You may not need 25-40. You certainly don't need anything Merc branded. Merc does not manufacture oil.

My recommendation was based on engine year, additive (ZDDP) depletion, diesel oil tolerance vs. gas oil tolerance, etc.....

Please....use what you choose, but please don't use it because we said to. Most CSR folk make recommendations on what has worked for them. Some can make recommendations based on professional credentials. NONE of us can tell you what is going to work for you. That is your job. Then it's your job to report to the next person what worked for you........ Funny how that works!! For you to state "everyone says 25w-40 so that's what it will be." is a sure fire recipe to p!ss you off if 25w-40 is not the answer for you.
