For those who send out oil samples for analysis, could you share what company you recommend to use?

Thank you

Excellent Jaybeaux. I hope your summer has been a good one and everything running well on your boat.

Thank you!

+1 for Blackstone

I like how they write their reports as well, it's as if they're sitting right there talking to you. Easy to read, easy to follow.

Do they keep a running history for you and compare to previous years?
Yes they do. Just went from $13 to $15 and they do more parameters than Blackstone - who I used to use on my gas powered 340 years ago.

+ 1 on yes they do. I use CAT SOS because the previous owner did, All previous years’ samples are listed on a summary, and then a spreadsheet looking thing below with year to year comparisons of wear metals ppm and oil condition particle counts. Do I know what those values mean? Not really,I just rely on the green boxes in the summary.

Blackstone does something like this as well. But they are a lot more expensive too. I have been thinking of trying them out and do a dual test comparison this year to see the difference myself. Thanks for the detail.

The summer has been good. Made a trip to the southern part of the Bay a few weeks ago. I love bringing the boat into Norfolk/Portsmouth. Have you been there since we saw you on that sports fisher a few years ago?

The boat is running nicely except it can't go by a fuel dock without laying on $750+ in diesel. I think I have a flux capacitor problem or something. Surely it's not the price of diesel! Ha!

Hope your summer has been a good one. I just spent time this morning ordering engine oil, oil filters, Racor filters, and secondary fuel filters. Only thing left is anti-freeze, but I refuse to order that in August.

Oh, and when I got the 48, Blackstone added "my data" onto the data from the previous owner. I thought that was good. The data belongs to the engine; the engine belongs to the owner.

We were using Cat for years, until - One of my engines started to make oil; the mechanic pulled a sample and sent it in. The results came back showing normal. We were mystified as there was 8.5 gallons of oil in the engine which should have been 7.5. What we found out was Cat wasn't doing viscosity/flash point testing; that was a special request. Pulled another sample from the waste oil and sent it in again requesting the viscosity/flash point test and found the fuel......
I use Blackstone now and have no complaints the viscosity and flash point testing is routine.
In this report for my genny they are seeing a bit of what they think is fuel dilution -

Thank you for this, yes, engines aren't supposed to make oil! Was sold on CAT SOS because I have yearly sample records going back to 2010. Think I'm going to send to both for a year or two and then transition to Blackstone.
