Hi, i keep getting an engine malfunction alarm on my 2003 240SD. It is not giving any additional information and the comuter diagnostics doesn't show any alarms when checked.

It doesn't alter system operation. Turning off the boat and restarting it clears the alarm.

I normally get it in rougher waters such as crossing wake or similar waves at a speed of 20 mph. A few times, it has happened on smooth waters.

Seldom does it happen when pulling skiiers or tubes.

Any thoughts on what causes this could be related to?

Sounds from your description it really is an engine alarm. But I had a similar thing happen in rough water from my depth finder due to a loose connection on the back of the display behind the dash. I just tightened it down and all was well. However the alarm (more like a load chirp) was definitely a different sound than the engine alarm.

If no debris is restricting sea water intake for cooling, I would check the oil pressure. If the oil is low it won't give enough pressure.

Check the level in the outdrive fill bottle. if it is low, you will get an alarm but no code on the display.

We just had an issue with our 2006 240SD/5.0 MPI throwing an alarm two beeps the smartcraft said check engine. We were running about 30 mph when it went off. I checked everything I could think of all engine vitals were good. Checked the lube tank for the outdrive, engine oil, all temos and prussures were good. It turned out to ba na IAC valve on the throttlebody. Also read in my smartcraft manual the audable alarms are different for different problems on the engine. Two beeps is a sensor. I hope this helps.

Thanks. I am getting the 2 beeps every minute. I will look into the IAC. I am also interested if there are any alarms tied to the TRIM.

That thought crossed my mind. What also crissed my mind is why is something for Idle causing an alarm issue at 30mph.

I had an alarm that would come on randomly, more so when turning or rough water and it turned out to be the trim sensor "pucks". It did not seem to happen when pulling people.

I think it said something about a trim fault in the digital part of the gauge. This was on a 2004 240 SD with the Smartcraft.

Does your gauge say anything when the warning occurs?

I agree with vertible that it may be a bad Trim Sender. It sounds just like a problem I have had on and off and I will be replacing it this Fall when the boat is pulled. You say it does not show any alarms when checked. Does it show anything in the alarm history? These trim position senders are a known "problem part".

thanks

nothing shows in history. one other data point is on the SmartCraft under trim a couple observations:

1. when in pop mode say from depth, when i adjust trim it doesnt always pop or i have to hold it.

2. it seems like to jump 2-3 points and doesnt recognize small pushes. a i am running i can necesarily tell if it is adjusting.

what does it take to replace teim senders

It is not easy. Similiar to a bellows job I have heard. Before you do that, you may want to double check the connections from the trim senders in to the wiring harness. They should be labeled and fairly easy to get to on the top, back of the engine. I have heard of them coming loose or developing a little corrosion and causing weird things like this. Maybe unplug them and reseat.
